CLINTON, S.C.? Reed Kreiser went 3-for-3 including this second home run of the year to lead UNC Asheville to a 4-2 victory and a series win at Presbyterian on Sunday afternoon.
Kreiser got the Dogs (2-1) on the board in the second inning with some help from PC (1-2) starter Daniel Hill (0-1). Kreiser was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second base. He reached third on a wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball to give Asheville a 1-0 lead.
The Dogs added a run in the top of the fifth as Kevin Wiedenbacher walked and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Kreiser then singled Wiedenbacher home for a 2-0 lead.
PC answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Jesse Harmon led off with a double and scored on a RBI single by Cory Lyda. That was the only run the Blue Hose would get off Asheville starter Michael Bogart who went six innings allowing five hits and striking out nine for his first victory of the year.
Kreiser homered to left field with two outs in the seventh to once again give Asheville a two-run lead.
PC pulled back to within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Casey Carlson and Steven Henry opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Justin Schumer came into the game and gave up a hit to Nate Horton that scored Carlson but then got a fielders choice and a groundball double play to escape any further damage.
Asheville added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Elliott Arrington who had two hits on the day to give him six for the series had a one-out single. Kreiser singled to move Arrington to second where he would score on a RBI-single by pinch hitter Billy Enright.
Schumer would retire the Blue Hose in order in the ninth for his first save of the year.
The Bulldogs had 11 hits in the game giving them 29 hits in the three game series. Along with Arrington and Kreiser, Danny Baatz and Caitlyn Carter each posted multi-hit games with two hits apiece. The nine strikeouts for Bogart set a new career high.
Asheville will travel to Gardner-Webb for a 2 p.m. game on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
