Bulldogs Run Past Brevard for Non-Conference Win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball ran past Brevard 84-31 to close out non-conference play on Monday (Dec. 29) inside Kimmel Arena. This was Asheville's second consecutive game holding an opponent under 40 points.Â

The teams began the first quarter feeling each other out offensively, before Asheville closed the quarter on a 16-2 run to take a 22-7 lead to the second. Back-to-back three-pointers from Sara Yarnell and Aileen Marquez followed by a jumper from Taliya Council pushed the lead to 10, before buckets from Marquez and Clementina Odom closed out the quarter.

Asheville scored 19 points in the second quarter to Brevard's 11 to take a 41-18 lead to the break. The Bulldogs used a 12-2 run through the first five minutes to pull away, starting with buckets from Odom and Nia Green. Asheville scored nine points to Brevard's seven in the back half of the second quarter to head to the half.

Asheville scored 23 points to Brevard's 13 in the third quarter, to take a 64-31 lead to the fourth quarter. Brevard opened the quarter scoring eight of the first 11 points in the frame, before Green scored the next nine points for the Bulldogs as the frame headed to the media timeout. Asheville outscored Brevard 11-5 in the second half of the quarter as the game headed to the fourth.

The Bulldogs scored 20 points in the fourth quarter while holding Brevard scoreless in the period to bring the game to its final score. It was the first scoreless quarter for the Bulldog defense since holding Brevard scoreless in the second quarter of a 72-34 win back on Dec. 29, 2023.

Asheville outscored Brevard 33-7 off turnovers, 40-4 in the paint, 19-2 on second chances, 24-3 on fast breaks and 36-10 off the bench in the game. Green led all scorers with 19 points in the game, while Marquez and Kristen McMillan each had 13 points in the game. Jamaria Freeman had seven points in the game, while Jaidyn Koerdt added six points and Yarnell and Council each had five points. Deborah Orianegbena, D'yanna Maxey and Odom each had four points in the game, while Journee McDaniel and Trinity Fields each had two points. Asheville out-rebounded Brevard 58-31, finishing just one board shy of their team season-high. Orianegbena led all players on the glass with nine rebounds, while Green had eight and McMillan set a new career-high with seven boards. Yarnell pulled down six rebounds in the game, while Council and McDaniel each had five rebounds with Council matching her career-high. Freeman grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Koerdt, Maxey and Odom each had two rebounds and Marquez also had one. Freeman dished out a team-high four assists in the game, while Orianegbena, McDaniel and Fields each had three helpers in the game. Green, Council and Maxey each registered two assists in the game, while Marquez and Yarnell each had one assist.
