Women's Basketball Falls at High Point in League Opener

HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell at High Point in its Big South Conference opener by a score of 78-51.
 
High Point built a big lead through three quarters, before UNC Asheville would score 15 points to High Point's 10 in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score.
 
Asheville shot 31.8 percent (21-66) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-21) from long range and 57.1 percent (4-7) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored High Point 22-11 off the bench in the game, while also scoring seven points off turnovers, 24 points in the paint, nine points on second chances and four points on fast breaks. Nia Green led the Bulldogs with 15 points in the game, while Jamaria Freeman and Kristen McMillan each scored eight points. Journee McDaniel added seven points, while Deborah Orianegbena had four and Taliya Council and Jaidyn Koerdt each had three. Aileen Marquez had two points in the game, while D'yanna Maxey also had one. Freeman notched a new career-high on the glass with 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs, while Orianegbena had nine boards and Green also had five. Sara Yarnell and McDaniel each had three rebounds in the game, while Koerdt, Maxey, Trinity Fields and Clementina Odom each had two rebounds in the game. Marquez and Council each had one rebound in the game also. Freeman paced the Bulldogs with five assists in the game, while Marquez had three and Green, Orianegbena and McMillan each had one. Yarnell matched her career-high with three steals in the game, while Green, Freeman, McMillan, McDaniel and Fields each had one steal in the game. Freeman also set a new career-high in blocks with three, while Green, Yarnell, McDaniel and Council each posted one rejection in the game.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (Jan. 3) to host Winthrop in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena, with video, live stats, radio and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
