Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball Against Winthrop on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball saw a rally fall short against Winthrop on Saturday (Jan. 3) inside Kimmel Arena, as Asheville dropped the contest by a score of 59-55.

The teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter, until Asheville stretched its lead to five with under three minutes to play in the period at 12-7. Winthrop closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to head to the second quarter tied 15-15.

Winthrop opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run through the first three minutes, ultimately holding Asheville to just eight points in the period while scoring 19 as Winthrop took a 34-23 lead to the half.

Asheville responded to close the gap in the third quarter, scoring 18 points while holding Winthrop to just 12. Asheville opened the quarter on an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to just five halfway through the quarter, before the teams traded buckets and Winthrop led just 46-41 heading to the fourth.

Asheville was able to cut the deficit to just two part way through the fourth, with a three-pointer from D'yanna Maxey and a layup by Nia Green on back-to-back trips down the floor. Winthrop would push the lead back up to seven, before Asheville's comeback effort would fall short.

Asheville shot 38.3 percent (23-60) from the field, 22.7 percent (5-22) from long range and just 44.4 percent (4-9) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Winthrop 28-26 in the paint and 25-6 off the bench in the game, while also scoring 18 points off turnovers, six points on second chances and 11 points on fast breaks. Green paced the Bulldogs with 19 points in the game matching a career-high 9-15 shooting, while Journee McDaniel added 11 points off the bench. Aileen Marquez scored eight points in the game, while Jamaria Freeman added seven and Deborah Orianegbena chipped in four. Maxey scored three points in the game, while Taliya Council had two and Kristen McMillan had one. McDaniel led the rebounding effort with seven in the game, while Green had six and Freeman and Orianegbena each had five. Maxey grabbed four boards in the game, while Trinity Fields had three and Jaidyn Koerdt and Marquez each had one. Freeman dished out a team-high five assists in the game, while McDaniel had four and Orianegbena and Council each had two. Green, Koerdt, Marquez, Maxey and Fields each also had one assist in the game. Green led the effort with four steals in the game, while Freeman also had three and Maxey and Fields each had one. Green also posted both blocks in the game for Asheville.
