Green's Double-Double, McDaniel's Rebounding Effort Power Bulldogs Past Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - A double-double from Nia Green and a career-best rebounding effort from Journee McDaniel powered UNC Asheville past Gardner-Webb on Wednesday (Jan. 7) by a score of 62-51. This mark's Asheville's first win in Boiling Springs since a 61-60 victory ack on Jan. 30, 2018.
Gardner-Webb scored the first six points of the game, before Asheville tied things up 6-6 just over three minutes in. Asheville would close the first quarter on a 12-5 run to take an 18-11 to the second.
Gardner-Webb would hold UNC Asheville to nine points in the second quarter, scoring 12 to cut the halftime deficit to 27-23.
Asheville would score 23 points to Gardner-Webb's 17 in the third quarter, ultimately taking a 50-40 lead to the third. Asheville stretched the lead to 11 within the first two minutes of the quarter, before Gardner-Webb used a run to cut the lead to just one with under four and a half minutes to play in the quarter. Asheville would counter with an 11-2 run over the final four minutes of the quarter to take their double-digit lead to the fourth.
Asheville scored 12 points to Gardner-Webb's 11 in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs secured their first Big South Conference win of the season.
Asheville shot 45.5 percent (25-55) from the field, 29.4 percent (4-17) from long range and 70.0 percent (7-10) from the foul line in the win. Asheville outscored Gardner-Webb 35-20 off turnovers, 36-18 in the paint, 14-10 on second chances and 13-4 off the bench while also scoring four points on fast breaks in the game. Green led the way with 18 points matching a career-high 9-15 shooting to go along with matching her career-high 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, while D'yanna Maxey also had 14 points in the game. McDaniel scored eight points in the game to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds, matching the most boards in a game by a Bulldog since Deborah Orianegbena against High Point back on Feb. 8, 2025. Jamaria Freeman added seven points, while Aileen Marquez had six points and Kristen McMillan chipped in five. Orianegbena and Taliya Council each had two points in the game. Asheville more than doubled-up Gardner-Webb on the glass out-rebounding the Runnin' Bulldogs 47-23. In addition to rebounding efforts from McDaniel and Green, Orianegbena had seven rebounds while McMillan had four. Freeman and Council each had three boards in the game, while Marquez also had one. McDaniel led the way with four assists in the game, while Green had three and Maxey had two. Freeman, Orianegbena and Marquez each also registered one assist in the game. Green finished the game with a team-high four steals, while Freeman had three and Maxey, Marquez and McMillan each had one. McDaniel and Orianegbena each posted one block in the game for Asheville.
