Green Records Second Straight Double-Double as Women's Basketball Battles but Falls to Longwood on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore guard Nia Green recorded her second consecutive double-double and UNC Asheville Women's Basketball battled until the final horn, but the Bulldogs ultimately fell to visiting Longwood by a score of 67-58. Green becomes the first Bulldog since Kai Cater in 2020-21 to record back-to-back double-doubles.
The Bulldogs scored the first four points of the game on buckets from Journee McDaniel and Green, before the Lancers closed the quarter on a 17-6 run to take a 17-10 lead to the second.
Asheville outscored Longwood 22-18 in the second quarter to close the gap to just 35-32 headed to the half. Longwood stretched the lead to 12 early in the frame, before Asheville responded with the next five points to close the gap to seven and force a Longwood timeout. The Bulldogs scored 12 of the quarter's final 20 points as the game went to the half.
Longwood won the third quarter 15-13 in a frame that was predominantly defensive on both sides, as they took a 50-45 lead to the fourth.
Longwood's lead fluctuated through the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs got within as few as two and Longwood's lead didn't grow above five. Asheville was finally able to tie the game at 58 with under four minutes left, before Longwood closed the game on a 9-0 run to bring the game to its final score.
Asheville shot 38.7 percent (24-62) from the floor, just 12.5 percent (3-24) from long range and 46.7 percent (7-15) from the foul line in the game. Asheville also outscored Longwood 40-28 in the paint in the game, while also scoring 14 points off turnovers, 18 on second chances, eight on fast breaks and six off the bench. Green paced Asheville with a game-high 22 points to match her career-high on a career-high nine made field goals, to go along with a career-high 12 boards to complete her third double-double of the season and of her career. McDaniel added 11 points in the game, while Jamaria Freeman had eight points and D'yanna Maxey had six to eclipse 400 points for her college career. Deborah Orianegbena had five points in the game, while Aileen Marquez had three. Taliya Council chipped in two points, while Kristen McMillan also had one. Along with Green's game-high 12 boards, Orianegbena had six rebounds and McDaniel and Freeman each had four. Maxey and Marquez each had three rebounds in the game, while McMillan also had two. Freeman dished out a team-best six assists in the game, while Maxey had three along with two from Green and one from McDaniel. McDaniel and Orianegbena each had three steals in the game for Asheville with Orianegbena matching her career-high, while Green and Marquez each had one. McDaniel, Marquez and Council each recorded one block in the game for Asheville.
