Individual Efforts Not Enough as Women's Basketball Drops Conference Contest to Charleston Southern

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Several individual efforts were not enough as UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its Big South Conference contest to Charleston Southern on Wednesday (Jan. 14) by a score of 72-66.

The teams traded scores through the first quarter, as the game ended up tied 15-15 through 10 minutes of play. Charleston Southern would win the second quarter 22-15 to take a 37-30 lead to the half.

Asheville won the third quarter 19-18 to get back within six heading to the fourth. The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 12-4 run to take a 43-41 lead at the third quarter media break, before Charleston Southern finished the quarter on a 14-6 run to take a 55-49 lead to the final frame.

Asheville scored five of the first eight points in the fourth quarter to close the gap through four minutes of play, before Charleston Southern responded to stretch their lead back to eight at the halfway point of the frame. Charleston Southern would take the air of out of the ball in the final few minutes to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 35.5 percent (27-76) from the field, just 15.8 percent (3-19) from long range and just 50 percent (9-18) from the foul line in the contest. Asheville also out-scored Charleston Southern 12-5 off turnovers, 38-28 in the paint and 11-7 on second chances while also scoring six points on fast breaks and seven points off the bench. Journee McDaniel led the scoring effort with 19 points, while Nia Green recorded her third consecutive double-double with 16 points and a new career-high 14 rebounds. Green becomes the second player in the Big South Conference this season to have a streak of at least three straight double-doubles, and is the first Bulldog to do so since Jessica Guarneri (1999-02). Jamaria Freeman also added 15 points setting a new career-high with six field goals made. Deborah Orianegbena added seven points in the game, while Aileen Marquez had three and Taliya Council, D'yanna Maxey and Jaidyn Koerdt each had two points in the game. In addition to Green's game-high 14 rebounds, Orianegbena pulled down 13 to help Asheville out-rebound Charleston Southern 45-44. Council matched her career-high with five rebounds in the game, while Freeman also had four and McDaniel had three. Maxey and Trinity Fields each had one rebound in the game. Freeman dished out a career-high nine assists in the game, while Green had five and McDaniel and Maxey each had two. Orianegbena and Marquez each also had one assist in the game. Freeman also paced the Bulldogs with two steals in the game, while McDaniel, Green and Orianegbena each had one in the contest. Orianegbena also posted Asheville's lone block in the game.
