ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop rallied from an early deficit to upend the UNC Asheville baseball team by a score of 9-8 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon. The loss moved Asheville's record to 21-17 overall and 7-10 in Big South play.
The Bulldog offense totaled 11 hits on Saturday vs. Winthrop and three players had multi-hit days. Robbie Burnett continues to swing a hot bat going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Michael Groves also had a two-hit day going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and one home run. Finally, Tony Castonguay picked up a pair of doubles and drove in a pair of runs as well.
Asheville started Saturday's game playing well. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the second and third innings, three more in the fourth, and added a single run in the fifth to jump out to an 8-0 lead.
Bulldog starting pitcher Ryan Douglas kept the Eagles off the scoreboard through the first four innings. However, Winthrop was able to get to Douglas for five runs in the fifth to take a significant bite out of the Bulldog lead, shrinking it down to three runs, 8-5.
Justin Honeycutt came in to relieve Douglas in the sixth. Honeycutt tossed back-to-back shutout innings in the sixth and seventh innings to keep Asheville's lead at three. Winthrop was able to scratch across a pair of runs off Honeycutt in the eighth though to cut the Bulldog lead to one, 8-7, heading to the ninth inning.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a hit by pitch, single, and a wild pitch. Winthrop held Asheville scoreless in the top of the 10th to have a chance to win the game in the bottom half. The Eagles did just that as they started the frame with a leadoff triple before an Asheville error ended the game with a 9-8 score in favor of Winthrop.
Asheville and Winthrop will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch for that contest is set for 1 p.m.
