Bulldogs Fall Late at Winthrop, 5-4

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell at Winthrop on Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-4. With Sunday's setback, Asheville moves to 21-18 overall and 7-11 in Big South play.
Asheville starting pitcher Clay Edmondson turned in another solid outing for the Bulldogs. The sophomore righthander tossed 6.2 innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits to go with eight strikeouts. His eight strikeouts on Sunday were a new season high for Edmondson.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Ty Kaufman. Kaufman went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Fermin Osio and Kohl Abrams also recorded hits for Asheville in the contest.
Asheville got on the board first on Sunday with a three-run third inning. Osio and Abrams got things started with back-to-back singles. Kaufman was attempting to bunt both runners up a base, but a Winthrop error scored Osio instead to give the Bulldogs the lead, 1-0.
After Robbie Burnett was hit by a pitch, Dylan Bacot worked a walk with the bases loaded to force in another run. Corbin Lanowitz would drive Kaufman in with an RBI groundout later in the frame to stake Edmondson to a 3-0 lead.
Winthrop would answer Asheville's three-run third with two runs of its own in the bottom half thanks to a two-run home run from its starting pitcher Brody Hopkins.
The Eagles would tie the game a couple innings later in the fifth thanks to an unearned run that scored on a sacrifice fly.
Following a scoreless sixth, the Bulldogs scratched across an unearned run in the seventh to pull back in front, 4-3.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Eagles scored one run in the eighth to tie the game before walking it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday when they host Wofford at Greenwood Field in non-conference action. First pitch for that matchup is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
