USC Upstate Upends Asheville, 10-4

04.14.2023 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped the first game of its series vs. USC Upstate on Friday night at Greenwood Field by a score of 10-4. With Friday's setback, the Bulldogs move to 18-15 overall and 4-6 in Big South play.

Asheville outhit the Spartans on Friday, 11-10. Corbin Lanowitz continues to swing a hot bat for Asheville going 3-for-4 with a walk and a run driven in. Robbie Burnett hit a solo home run in a 2-for-5 day at the plate, while the duo of Tylan Reece and Tony Castonguay also collected a pair of hits for Asheville.

Asheville used a total of five pitchers against Upstate in Friday's series opener. Blake Little made his first start of the season and worked the first 2.2 innings. Little, who got the loss, allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits to go with three strikeouts. The most effective outing by a Bulldog pitcher came from Justin Needles. Needles was not only effective in allowing just one run in his outing but also saved the rest of the Bulldog bullpen by tossing the final three innings.

Upstate scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly. However, the Bulldogs bounced back in the bottom half and scored twice. Burnett, who got on base with a single, scored on a wild pitch before Lanowitz drove in Dylan Bacot with a single to make it 2-1 Bulldogs.

The Spartan offense put together some multi-run innings in the third and fifth. Upstate scored three times in the third to pull back in front of the Bulldogs. A four-run fifth inning, however, gave the Spartans even more cushion.

Asheville's offense, meanwhile, had runners reach base and it outhit Upstate, but it did not group enough of those hits together to keep pace. Castonguay drove in Michael Groves in the fourth with a well-placed bunt. Burnett slugged his 11th home run of the season in the ninth for Asheville's fourth run. Unfortunately, the early cushion put together by Upstate stood up and the Spartans won, 10-4.

The series will resume on Saturday. First pitch for that contest is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
