Bulldogs Slug Three Home Runs in a 9-4 Victory over USC Upstate

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team slugged three home runs on Saturday on its way to a 9-4 victory over USC Upstate at Greenwood Field. Saturday's win by Asheville not only evens the series at a game a piece but also boosts the Bulldogs' overall record to 19-15 and 6-8 in Big South action.
Robbie Burnett continued his hot streak at the plate by going 3-for-5 with a three-run home run on Saturday. The home run was Burnett's 12th of the season, which is tied for the seventh-most by a Bulldog in a single season in program history. Tylan Reece also launched a home run and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs. Dylan Bacot also hit a home run with a two-run blast to round out the offensive leaders for Asheville.
The Bulldogs used just two pitchers on Saturday. Senior right hander Ryan Douglas was solid and picked up the win, boosting his record to 6-0 on the season. Douglas pitched the first five innings, allowed four runs on six hits, and struck out four. Justin Honeycutt followed Douglas and picked up a rare four-inning save. Honeycutt was stellar as he allowed just one baserunner in his four innings of work.
Asheville would strike first on Saturday. Michael Groves got things started with a single and Reece followed with a double down the left field line to give Asheville the early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs would add to their advantage in the third. Burnett got on base with a single and Bacot connected on an opposite field home run to grow the Asheville lead to three.
After not walking a batter in the first three innings, Upstate starter Henry Proger had some control issues in the fourth. Proger walked both Kohl Abrams and Ty Kaufman in front of Burnett. Burnett took full advantage of this run-producing chance with a long home run to right field. Bacot scored later that inning on a wild pitch to make it 7-1 Asheville.
Douglas began Saturday with three no-hit innings against the Spartans. Upstate started to put some things together in the fourth with a single run then added three more runs in the fifth to cut the Bulldog lead to three, 7-4.
The Bulldog cooled off a bit, but they were still able to add some insurance runs off the Spartan bullpen. Reece drove in Cameron Johnson, who reached with a double, on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before homering in the seventh.
Honeycutt took things the rest of the way and kept the Spartan offense quiet, surrendering just one baserunner on a single in the ninth inning.
With rain in the forecast tomorrow, Sunday's series finale will now begin at 11 a.m. The game will still be streamed on ESPN+.
