Bulldogs Rally to Down Presbyterian, 8-7

04.01.2023 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –  The UNC Asheville baseball team trailed Presbyterian by five runs at one point on Saturday but battled back to even the Big South series against the Blue Hose at a game a piece with an 8-7 win at Greenwood Field. With Saturday's victory, the Bulldogs improved to 16-10 overall and 3-5 in Big South action.

All nine members of Asheville's starting lineup reached base at least once on Saturday. Corbin Lanowitz collected the lone multi-hit outing for Asheville going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and another knocked in. Cameron Johnson hit a three-run home run, while Kohl Abrams drove in a pair of runs to help the cause as well.

Asheville used just two pitchers on Saturday. Senior Ryan Douglas got the starting nod and worked the first five innings. Douglas allowed five runs on six hits to go with four strikeouts. Justin Honeycutt tossed the final four innings for Asheville and scattered four hits, two walks, and allowed two runs. Honeycutt was credited with the win and improved his record to 4-2 on the season.

Saturday's contest began as a pitchers' duel between Asheville's Douglas and Presbyterian's starter Kyle Mueller. Both starters began Saturday by tossing three no-hit innings. PC's offense would wake up first. A pair of singles by the Blue Hose was followed by a three-run home run from Dalton Reeves to give Mueller and Presbyterian a 3-0 lead.
Presbyterian would strike again in the fifth. Back-to-back singles were followed by a two-run triple by Brody Fahr to make the score 5-0 Presbyterian going to the bottom of the fifth.

Facing a five-run deficit, the Bulldogs began to chip away at the Blue Hose lead in the fifth. A rally was ignited by the bottom of the order. Ty Kaufman got things started with a walk. A wild pitch moved him up to second and a productive groundout by Michael Groves advanced Kaufman to third with one out.

Tony Castonguay drove in Kaufman with a single to make the score 5-1. Drew Bristow hammered an RBI double off the wall to score Castonguay and Abrams knocked Bristow in with a single to cut the PC lead down to two runs, 5-3.

Presbyterian was able to scratch across two runs against Honeycutt to build its lead back to four, 7-3. Asheville wasn't done with its rally though.

In the bottom of the eighth, Robbie Burnett got things started with a double in the left-centerfield gap. Dylan Bacot worked a walk to add another runner on base for Asheville. Lanowitz brought Burnett around to score with a double, which moved Bacot up to third base with one away. The biggest hit of the game, however, came off the bat of Johnson as he crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for a three-run home run to tie the score, 7-7.

Honeycutt worked around a single to log a scoreless ninth setting up an opportunity for the Bulldogs to win it in the ninth. Castonguay worked a leadoff walk and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Bentley Yeatts was called on to pinch run for Castonguay. Another wild pitch by Presbyterian moved Yeatts up to third base with nobody out. Following a strikeout, Abrams came through with a fly ball deep enough to score Yeatts on a sacrifice fly and give Asheville the 8-7 victory. It marks Asheville's first walk off victory at Greenwood Field since May 2021.

The rubber match of the series between the Bulldogs and Blue Hose will be played tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. on ESPN+. Following Sunday's series finale, there will be an Easter egg hunt for children ages 12 and under.
