Baseball Completes Sweep over Iona on Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville baseball completed its series sweep over Iona with a 12-2 mercy-rule victory on Sunday (Mar. 5) at Greenwood Field.
After a leadoff walk by Ty Kaufman in the first, Robbie Burnett kick-started the scoring with a two-run shot to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Later in the inning with two outs, an Iona error off the bat of Tylan Reece allowed Dylan Bacot to score for a 3-0 Asheville lead. After a few scoreless frames for each team, Asheville would tack on three runs starting with a solo shot off the bat of Burnett for his second of the game and fifth of the season. After Corbin Lanowitz reached first on a passed ball after a strikeout, he would race around to score on a Cameron Johnson double to left center. The final Asheville run of the inning came on a Reece sacrifice fly to score Johnson, with Asheville leading 5-0 after five. Iona would bring across their two runs in the sixth, before the Bulldogs would counter with one in the home half. Bacot was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Khole Abrams and push the Asheville lead to 7-2. The Bulldogs would then polish off the game and the sweep with five runs in the home half of the seventh. Reece began the inning with a walk, before Tony Castonguay was hit by a pitch. The pair would move up a base on a passed ball, before Abrams brought them both home with a single up the middle. The inning continued as the bases were later loaded for Bacot, who singled to left to bring home Abrams and Kaufman. After Lanowitz reached on a fielder's choice that pushed Burnett to third, Burnett would score on a RBI groundout by Johnson to bring the game to its final score.
Burnett and Abrams each had two hits in the game, while Bacot, Lanowitz, Johnson and Michael Groves each had one. Burnett and Bacot each drove in three runs in the game, while Abrams and Johnson had two and Reece also brought home one. Burnett scored three times in the game, while Abrams and Kaufman each scored twice. Bacot, Johnson, Lanowitz, Drew Bristow and Castonguay each scored once in the game. Justin Honeycutt (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, scattering four hits and allowing two earned runs over five innings while allowing three walks and punching out five. Cole Schiff allowed one hit in one inning of relief work along with one walk and two strikeouts, while Cole Bates tossed one inning of relief with one strikeout.
