Bulldogs Ride Second Half Surge to Conference Win over Winthrop
01.02.2023 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team rode a second half surge to a Big South Conference win over Winthrop on Monday (Jan. 2), with the Bulldogs winning 54-48.
"It doesn't matter what the score is, you want to get the win," said Head Coach Honey Brown.
The teams started off slow in the first half, with Winthrop leading 12-8 after one quarter and 19-13 at the half.
The Bulldogs seemingly flipped a switch in the locker room at the break, going on to out-score Winthrop 17-10 in the third quarter and 24-19 in the fourth to take the win.
"We're proud of our response in the second half and how we were able to pull together," said Brown. "Even on a night where we didn't shoot really well, we got enough buckets in transition to get the win."
Winthrop held a six-point lead at several points in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs were able to continue chipping away each possession. The Bulldogs would finally tie the game at 27 and then take a one-point lead with a pair of Jordaynia Ivie free throws in the final minute of the third, before Winthrop scored a bucket with 25 seconds left in the period for a 29-28 lead. Nycerra Minnis would score a turnaround jumper in the paint with eight seconds on the clock to send the game to the fourth with Asheville leading 30-29.
The teams traded buckets to start the fourth quarter, before Winthrop tied the game at 33 just 90 seconds into the period. Winthrop would take a 36-33 lead with an old-fashioned three-point play from Shamyjah Price, before Ivie would knock down a triple to tie the game at 36 with six and a half to play. Ivie would later come up with clutch points on back-to-back possessions to put Asheville ahead by four, before the Bulldogs were able to take control of the game in the fourth quarter and put the victory on ice.
Asheville scored 17 points off turnovers to Winthrop's 15, while also out-scoring Winthrop 26-22 in the paint, 9-7 on fast breaks and 12-8 off the bench.
Ivie led the way with a game-high 19 points just one off her career-high, while going 8-9 from the charity stripe to mark new career-highs in both free throw attempts and makes.
"Getting to the line was important, especially in transition," said Ivie. "My teammates were finding me in good spots, and finishing those free throws is something we work on every day in practice."
McKinley Brooks-Sumpter also had nine points in the game, while Mallory Bruce, Minnis and Dakota McCaughan each had six points in the game for Asheville. Faith Adams and Abigail Wilson each also had four points in the game. Brooks-Sumpter pulled down a game-high seven rebounds in the game, while Minnis also had five and Jamaya Blanks had four. Bruce, Wilson and Jamia Blake each had three rebounds in the game, while Ivie had two and Adams and McCaughan each had one. Brooks-Sumpter and Bruce each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Ivie and Millie Brown each helped on two Asheville buckets in the game. Ivie registered a team-high three steals in the game, while Adams also had two and Brooks-Sumpter, Bruce and Minnis each had one. Brooks-Sumpter also posted the lone block in the game for Asheville.
