Bulldogs fall short against College of Charleston
09.27.2022 | Men's Soccer
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - In its final non-conference match of the season, the UNC Asheville men's soccer team took a loss, 3-0, against College of Charleston.Â
After two strong showings in which the Bulldogs were able to come from behind and tie against Wofford and Gardner-Webb, they were unable to continue their late game heroics in this match against the Cougars.
For the first moments of the game, Asheville went on the attack with Sam Presser, Stewart Patnaud, and Jake Kemhadjian putting up a flurry of shots. But after this outburst of offense to open up the match, the Cougar defense kept the Bulldogs quiet for the remainder of the remainder game, only allowing one shot on goal from Patnaud.
With the Asheville offense stifled, College of Charleston scored off a second chance shot after a save from the goalkeeper Grant Stidham in the 24th minute.
In the second half, the Bulldogs got their best opportunity to score in the 74th minute, as Mason Cookus was able to get around the defenders on the edge and put up a cross to the awaiting Patnaud in the box, but was unable to connect as Patnaud's shot went high.
Ian McGill came on for the Bulldogs in the second half for the Bulldogs and was able to make four impressive saves to keep the score 1-0. Unfortunately his efforts were not enough as the Cougars sealed the game with two goals scored by Chris Elliot, who twice was able to catch the Asheville defenders off-guard and get clean looks against McGill.
The Bulldogs, now 1-7-2 on the season, will return home to Greenwood Field for a Big South Conference match on Saturday as they take on the Longwood. The start time for that contest is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
