Bulldogs cruise past Radford to clinch another series victory, 25-8

Asheville's performance offensively on Saturday ranks near the top in the history of Bulldog baseball. The 25 runs rank as the second-most the Bulldogs have ever scored in a single game and the most ever scored by the team vs. a Big South opponent. The Bulldogs, who scored at least one run in eight of the nine innings on Saturday, had plenty of contributors to fuel this historical performance. 13 different Bulldogs tallied a hit, 12 scored, and/or drove in a run, and had eight multiple RBI. Overall, Asheville finished with 21 hits on Saturday, which marks the most in a game since February 23, 2019, when it also collected 21 hits vs. UMBC.
Several Bulldogs had stellar games individually to fuel the record-breaking win. Dominic Freeberger went 4-for-6 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Dylan Bacot also reached base five times with a 2-for-2 day, three walks, and drove in a team-high five runs. Robbie Burnett scored a team-high five runs and drove in a run of his own. Sophomores Ty Kaufman (3-for-4, two RBI, two runs scored) and Michael Groves (3-for-3, three runs scored, three RBI, solo home run) also had three-hit days for Asheville.Freeberger just keeps hitting! On the pitching side, Justin Honeycutt tallied his third win of the season after tossing four shutout innings. Honeycutt allowed one hit, walked two, and struck out three in his outing. Ryan Douglas started for Asheville and worked the first four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits.
The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Asheville sent 16 men to the plate and scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. It marked the first time Asheville had scored 10 or more runs in an inning since 2008, when it also scored 10 runs in a frame vs. Hartford.
After tallying a single run in the second, the Bulldogs once again batted around in the third on their way to scoring seven more runs. Asheville did not have any other huge offensive innings but scored one or two runs in every inning, with the lone exception occurring in the ninth when the Highlanders finally held Asheville scoreless.
Thanks to Saturday's win, Asheville's Big South record stands at 9-5 on the season. The 9-5 record not only puts Asheville in third place in the league standings behind only Campbell (13-1) and USC Upstate (12-5), but it also marks the Bulldogs' best 14-game start to Big South play in the program's history.
Asheville will aim to pick up its second sweep of the season in Sunday's series finale. The first pitch for that matchup is set for 1 p.m.
