BIG SOUTH RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -Â The Big South Conference announced Monday that UNC Asheville's Michael Groves had been selected as the league's Player of the Week for the games played between March 21-27. It marks the first weekly honor of Groves' career and the third straight week that a Bulldog has earned a weekly award from the conference.
Groves played a crucial role in Asheville posting a 4-0 record last week. The sophomore first baseman hit .467 in 15 at-bats, with five of his seven hits going for extra bases. Groves also drove in a team-high eight runs, scored four times himself, and drew a pair of walks. He tallied at least one hit in all four games and is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak. His top performance of the week came in Asheville's 8-6 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. In that contest, Groves totaled a career-high four hits with two doubles, a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored. Groves' triple was one of the biggest hits for the Bulldogs to date as it was a three-run triple in the eighth inning to pull Asheville in front, 7-5, before winning it by an 8-6 final score.Â
Groves joins fellow Bulldogs Justin Honeycutt (March 21 – Relief Pitcher of the Week) and Blake Little (March 14 – Relief Pitcher of the Week) as Asheville players that have earned a weekly award from the Big South in 2022. Additionally, Groves is the first Bulldog to be tabbed the league's Player of the Week since April 12, 2021, when Dominic Freeberger landed the honor.Â
Groves and the rest of the Bulldogs will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday when it takes on Appalachian State in a neutral site matchup at L.P. Frans Stadium, the home of the Hickory Crawdads (High-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers).Â
