BIG SOUTH RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday that UNC Asheville's Dominic Freeberger and Jacob Edwards are the Big South Player of the Week and Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played between April 5-12.Â
Freeberger had an impressive week hitting .522 with 12 hits in 23 at-bats, nine runs scored, two home runs, and six RBI. In addition to his work at the plate, Freeberger also had 38 fielding chances in four games without an error and picked up a save to finish off a Bulldog victory in game one of a doubleheader Friday at Winthrop. Freeberger was especially good in Friday's twin bill. The Baltimore native posted nine hits in 11-at bats (.818 batting average), scored seven times, stole a base, launched two home runs, and totaled six RBI. Furthermore, Freeberger posted a five-hit performance in game two, which was one shy of the school record for hits in a game.Â
Monday's honor marks the second straight week that Freeberger has received recognition from the Big South as he was named the league's Relief Pitcher of the Week on April 5. Freeberger joins former Bulldog Greg Gasparro as the only players in program history to earn a weekly honor from the conference for their performances as a position player and pitcher.Â
"Dominic and Assistant Coach Chris Bresnahan have been working very hard to get the most out of his swing," said Head Coach Scott Friedholm. "This weekend, it all came together for Dom. I don't think I've ever seen an offensive stat line for a doubleheader like he had on Friday."Â
Edwards picked up his second win of the season with a stellar outing in the second game of a doubleheader at Winthrop. Edwards worked the first five innings of that contest, allowed seven hits and two runs, and logged a season-high seven strikeouts.
This award marks the second time in Edwards' career as a Bulldog he has earned a weekly honor from the Big South. Edwards was the league's freshman of the week back on March 4, 2019.Â
"Jacob pitched a tremendous game and clinched the series win for us against a very good Winthrop team," Friedholm said of Edwards. "His success stemmed from his command of the strike zone with seven strikeouts vs. zero walks. He had a feel for all his pitches this weekend, and we hope this will only continue to his boost his confidence."Â
