Dominic Freeberger Named Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week
04.05.2021 | Baseball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday that UNC Asheville's Dominic Freeberger was named the Big South's Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played between March 29 and April 4. Freeberger is the second Bulldog to receive this honor in 2021, joining teammate Justin Honeycutt (March 22).
"A well-deserved honor for Dominic," said Head Coach Scott Friedholm. "To have Dom back in our bullpen rotation is a huge lift for our club. His ability to be efficient (19 pitches in game one, 14 pitches in game two) allowed us to use him twice on Saturday to pick up a pair of victories."
Freeberger accomplished a rare pitching feat in Saturday's doubleheader vs. Presbyterian. In game one, Freeberger was credited with his first collegiate pitching win after tossing the final 1.1 innings to finish off Asheville's 8-5 victory. The Baltimore native ended the day notching his first career save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 7-6 win for the Bulldogs and a doubleheader sweep. Overall, Freeberger worked 2.1 perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts in two appearances.
Since making his first pitching appearance of the season on March 23 vs. Gardner-Webb, Freeberger has logged 5.1 innings, allowed one run (not earned), struck out four, and has not allowed a hit.
With Freeberger and Honeycutt earning the league's relief pitcher of the week honors in 2021, the Bulldogs join USC Upstate as the only other school to have multiple relievers earn this award this spring.
