Bulldogs start fast but fall to USC Upstate on Senior Day
02.19.2022 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team started quickly on Saturday, outscoring USC Upstate 23-9 in the first quarter. However, Upstate mounted a comeback and upended the Bulldogs, 68-57.
Nadiria Evans, who was honored after the game as a part of the team's senior day, led the way for the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a team-high 19 points. She also added five rebounds and five assists in the contest. Kai Carter added 12 points and led Asheville on the glass with seven rebounds. Freshman Jordaynia Ivie chipped in 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers for Asheville.
As mentioned earlier, the Bulldogs began Saturday's contest with arguably its most impressive quarter of the season, both offensively and defensively. Collectively, the Bulldogs connected on 10 of their 15 field goals in the opening stanza, including a trio of made 3-pointers. Defensively, Asheville clamped down on Upstate's defense and forced seven turnovers, and held the Spartan offense to just nine points.
Upstate, which came into Saturday's game as the Big South's leader in team shooting percentage (46.6 percent), promptly answered Asheville's stellar quarter with one of its own. The Spartans rattled off a 12-0 run at one point to rapidly cut into Asheville's lead. As good as the Bulldogs were clicking in the first quarter, they went equally cold in the second quarter, shooting 3-for-17 from the field. Even with this sudden change in momentum, Upstate still trailed Asheville at the break, 31-29.
Upstate continued its comeback mission in the third quarter. The Spartans put together a 14-0 run in the frame to pull in front for the first time in the contest. Upstate led Asheville by 10 points, 50-40, heading to the fourth quarter with this second run of offense.
The Bulldogs kept battling in the final frame, but they only got as close as seven points in the last 10 minutes. A made free throw from Mallory Bruce with 1:31 to go in regulation got the Bulldogs to that seven-point separation. However, Upstate built its lead back out to 11 points to finish off its fourth straight victory over the Bulldogs.
Asheville will be back in action on Wednesday when it visits High Point for another Big South matchup. Tip-off for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
