ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball rolled past Converse by a score of 79-25 in the season opener Monday night (Nov. 7) at Kimmel Arena.
The Bulldogs jumped on the Valkyries early, building a 15-5 lead part way through the first quarter. UNC Asheville would hold the Valkyries to just two points in the final two minutes and change in the opening period as the Bulldogs took a 21-7 lead to the second quarter.
The Bulldogs would score 19 points in the second quarter, holding the Valkyries to just nine. UNC Asheville would continue to build on its lead and head to the half ahead 40-16.
UNC Asheville would score the first 14 points of the second half, keeping the Valkyries under 20 points until late in the frame to take a 65-22 lead to the fourth.
The Bulldogs held the Valkyries to just three points in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 to bring the game to its final score.
UNC Asheville held Converse to single-digit scoring in each of the four quarters in the contest.
"We were trying to stay connected defensively with five players playing as one," said head coach Honey Brown. "We did a good job I think with some of our defensive coverages, Coach Dodd did a great job with the scouting report and we were prepared for some things they were going to do on offense."
Dakota McCaughan led all scorers with 14 points in the game, coming off the bench and shooting 4-7 from beyond the arc. Jordaynia Ivie chipped in 12 points in the game, while Abigail Wilson and Mallory Bruce each added 10. Faith Adams and Jamaya Blanks each finished with eight points, while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter and Jamia Blake each had six. Millie Brown contributed three points, while Nycerra Minnis also had two.
"The more balanced we are, the better we will be," said Brown. "We had several not just in double figures, and I think that's hard to guard, that's hard to scout and it's hard to game-plan for."
UNC Asheville out-rebounded Converse 45-21 in the contest, led by 10 from Bruce to complete the double-double effort. Brooks-Sumpter finished with eight boards, while Jamia Blake also had five. Four other Bulldogs pulled down four rebounds apiece in the game, while Minnis had three, Ivie had two and McCaughan also had one. Blake and Ivie each dished out four assists in the contest, while McCaughan had three and Mallory had two. Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each also helped on one bucket in the game. Ivie, McCaughan and Blanks each had three steals in the game, while Mallory had two and four others each recorded one steal. Minnis recorded the lone block on the night for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (1-0) return to the hardwood on Sunday (Nov. 13) at Florida. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Gainesville, Fla., with the game being televised on SEC Network and live stats also available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
