GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell at Florida on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 13) by a score of 86-40.
"This was a great opportunity to play a Power Five team," said head coach Honey Brown. "We were disappointed in our number of turnovers but give credit their defensive pressure. I believe this group is determined to learn from this game and get a lot better."
The Bulldogs got on the board first with an old-fashioned three-point play from Mallory Bruce, before the Gators would score a couple of buckets to take a lead. The Bulldogs would battle back late in the quarter to get back within single digits, before Florida took a 22-11 lead to the second quarter.
UNC Asheville would come on strong later in the second quarter, nearly matching Florida's 15 points in the frame by finishing the quarter with 12, going to the half down 37-23.
UNC Asheville batted in the second half, until the final horn sounded.
Bruce finished with a team-high 12 points in the game, while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter added eight and Jordaynia Ivie also had six. Dakota McCaughan chipped in five points, while Jamaya Blanks had four boards and Jamia Blake had three. Nycerra Minnis and Abigail Wilson each had two points, while Jamia Blake also had one. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with six boards, while Minnis, Blanks and Wilson each had five rebounds in the game. Bruce and McCaughan each had three rebounds in the contest, while Ivie had two and four others each had one rebound in the game. Brooks-Sumpter had two assists in the game, while Ivie, Millie Brown and Jada Brigman each had one assist in the game. Bruce and Ivie each registered three steals in the game, McCaughan had two and three others each had one steal in the game.
The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Friday (Nov. 18) at Queens (N.C.) in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Levine Center in Charlotte, N.C., with the game being streamed on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
