Bulldogs Win Third Straight with Comeback Victory over Presbyterian

04.27.2021 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After being no-hit through the first six innings, the UNC Asheville baseball team rallied to down Presbyterian by a score of 6-2 Tuesday evening in a Big South contest at Greenwood Field. The victory marks Asheville's third straight win after winning the last two games vs. Charleston Southern last Friday.

There was not a ton of offense through the early innings of Tuesday's contest. Both teams had baserunners, but the Blue Hose were the team to strike first. PC took advantage of a couple of Bulldog errors to take a 2-0 lead.

Presbyterian starting pitcher Alex Flood was on his game as he did not allow a hit through the first six innings. Ty Kaufman broke Flood's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh. Fellow freshman Michael Groves followed with another single in a pinch-hitting appearance. The back-to-back singles were enough to chase Flood from the game and into the Presbyterian bullpen.

Now facing the Blue Hose bullpen, Sebastian Dunn reached via an error to load the bases. Freshman Kohl Abrams was up next and came through with a clutch 3-run double down the left field line to give Asheville its first lead of the contest. Grayson Preslar scored Abrams in the next at-bat with a single to extend Asheville's lead to 4-2 headed to the eighth.

Following a scoreless top half of the eighth, MJ Lucas gave Asheville some more cushion to its lead, slugging a two-run home run to right field to make it 6-2 Bulldogs going to the ninth.

Senior Trey Jernigan, who entered the game in the eighth, was tasked to close things down for Asheville and did just that as the Blue Hose went three-up-three-down in the ninth. In doing so, Jernigan notched his first collegiate save. Fellow senior Ethan Tressler was credited with the win after tossing a scoreless inning of relief and striking out two. The victory marked Tressler's first of the 2021 season.

Asheville will look to keep things rolling this weekend when it travels to Campbell for a three-game Big South series beginning Friday. The Bulldogs and Camels will play once Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. All three games are scheduled to be on ESPN+.
