ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team swept a doubleheader against Charleston Southern Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field. Asheville won game one by a score of 17-2 in seven innings before winning game two 4-2. With the pair of victories, the Bulldogs clinched their fifth straight Big South series victory, and marked Asheville's first series win over CSU at Greenwood Field since 1994.
Game One Recap – In one of its most impressive offensive performances of the season, the Bulldogs totaled 16 hits and scored 17 runs to fuel a seven-inning 17-2 victory over the Buccaneers in the first game Friday. The 15-run victory is the largest margin of victory for the Bulldogs since April 3, 2013, when it defeated Western Carolina 15-0 at McCormick Field.
The offensive production was felt up-and-down the Bulldog lineup as all nine starters recorded at least one hit and scored a run, with eight of the nine driving in a run as well. Brandon Lankford led the way going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, four RBI with a one home run. Dominic Freeberger also launched a solo home run with a 2-for-3 day at the plate to go with three RBI. Wade Chandler, Sebastian Dunn, and MJ Lucas also recorded two-hit outings in game one. Furthermore, Ty Kaufman matched Freeberger's three RBI by knocking three as well.
Asheville matched its season-high for runs in an inning by scoring eight times in the first inning to jump on Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs pounded out six hits in the eight-run frame but were helped by a pair of Buccaneer errors to fuel the big inning. Following the eight-run first, the Bulldogs had a trio of three-run innings in the second, fifth, and sixth to conclude the stellar offensive outing.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Jacob Edwards turned in his third straight stellar start. Edwards pitched all seven innings for Asheville allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits to go with five strikeouts against zero walks. The victory is Edwards' third of the season and boosts his record to 3-5 in 2021.
Game Two Recap – After 33 runs were scored between the Bulldogs and Buccaneers in the first two games of the series, the series finale was much more of a pitchers' duel. Charleston Southern's Daniel Padysak and Asheville's Kole Harris matched each pitch-for-pitch through the first the game's first six innings before the game was turned over to both bullpens to decide a winner with the score tied at two.
The game was decided in the eighth. MJ Lucas got things started with a one-out single. Easton Jones followed with a walk. With Lucas and Jones on base, CSU reliever Krishna Raj committed a balk to move both Bulldogs up a base. Kohl Abrams cashed in on the mistake with a clutch sacrifice fly to score Lucas to give Asheville its first lead of the contest, 3-2. Chris Troost came through a batter later to score pinch-runner Drew Bristow to give the Bulldogs an insurance run heading to the ninth, 4-2.
Trey Jernigan, who entered the game in the seventh, closed out the game in the ninth. A Buccaneer did reach on a single, but he was wiped out on a double play to give the victory to Asheville, 4-2. For his three shutout innings, Jernigan was credited with the win boosting his record to 1-1.
The Bulldog offense had a balanced effort again in the series finale as each player who started the game reached base at least once. Troost and Freeberger each picked up a pair of hits, while Chandler also reached twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk to go with one RBI.
Next Up – Asheville will be back in action Tuesday as it hosts Presbyterian at Greenwood Field. This contest, which is a make-up game from earlier this season, is scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch and can be seen on ESPN+.
