ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will be back in action Tuesday when it hosts Presbyterian for a mid-week Big South contest at Greenwood Field. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch on ESPN+.
Probable Pitching Matchup
Alex Flood (PC) vs. Ryan Douglas (AVL)
Last Time Out – Asheville swept a doubleheader from Charleston Southern on Friday by scores of 17-2 and 4-2 and in doing so clinched its fifth straight Big South series victory. It also marked the first time the Bulldogs have won a series against CSU at Greenwood Field since 1994.
Ode to the Offense – The Bulldog offense exploded for 16 hits and 17 runs in the game one victory vs. Charleston Southern. The 17 runs marked the highest run total for the team this season and its largest margin of victory in a game since April 3, 2013 when it defeated Western Carolina, 15-0, at McCormick Field. Additionally, all nine Bulldogs recorded at least one hit, scored at least one run, and eight of the nine drove in a run as well.
Stellar Starts – Another key in Friday's sweep vs. Charleston Southern was the outings by Asheville's two starting pitchers, Jacob Edwards and Kole Harris. Between the two, they combined for 13 innings pitched, four runs (one earned), and eight strikeouts.
Streaking in Series – By taking two of three games from CSU, the Bulldogs have won five straight Big South series for the first time in program history. Not only that, Asheville joins USC Upstate, Campbell, and Charleston Southern as teams that have won five league series this spring.
Lankford Locked In – Senior Brandon Lankford has been one of Asheville key offensive players all season long but he has been especially productive in conference games. In 25 league games, Lankford is hitting .411 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI. Furthermore, Lankford is now tied fourth all-time in Big South history with 46 home runs. With one more blast he'll move into a tie for third place and four more to tie for second place.
Way to Go Wade – After playing sparingly through the season's first month, Wade Chandler has been on a tear recently at the plate. Since being inserted into the starting lineup as the Bulldogs' centerfielder, Chandler has hit .426 in 13 games, including seven multi-hit outings. Additionally, Chandler has reached base safely in all 13 of those contests and has picked up one hit in 12 of them.
About Presbyterian – Much like Asheville, Presbyterian picked up a series victory in Big South play over the weekend as it won two of three games vs. Campbell. PC, which is 12-13 overall and 11-8 in conference play, has a pair of two-way players to watch on Tuesday. Eric Toth and Chris Veach are not only key components in the Blue Hose offense but also their pitching staff. As hitters, Toth and Veach are hitting .292 and .344, respectively. As pitchers, the duo of has combined for four wins, six saves and 25 strikeouts in 20.2 innings thrown.
Series Rewind vs. PC – Tuesday's game between the Bulldogs and Blue Hose will mark the fifth time this season these two conference rivals have met. Asheville won two of three games against PC at Greenwood Field earlier this season, but the Blue Hose outlasted the Bulldogs in a 14-inning thriller in the lone matchup in Clinton, S.C., 5-4.
Attendance Policy – Face coverings are required, and social distancing protocols will be in place that will limit seating capacity to Asheville fans that are on the pass list. Attendees will be allowed to bring tailgate chairs and game operations staff will direct fans to sit in a socially distant manner. No visiting fans will be admitted.
