Baseball Travels to UNC Wilmington for a Three-Game Series
04.15.2021 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After a late schedule addition, the UNC Asheville baseball team will travel to UNC Wilmington for a three-game weekend series. Asheville and Wilmington will play one game a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with first pitch times set for 6 p.m., 4 p.m., and 1 p.m.
Probable Pitching Matchups
Game One: RHP Dawson Salter (AVL) vs. RHP Landen Roupp (UNCW)
Game Two: LHP Jacob Edwards (AVL) vs. RHP Adam Smith (UNCW)
Game Three: TBD (AVL) vs. RHP Luke Gesell (UNCW)
Last Time Out – The Bulldogs dropped their last game at Winthrop last Saturday by a score of 10-8. Despite the loss, Asheville still clinched the series victory by sweeping a doubleheader on Friday from the Eagles. By taking two of three games, the Bulldogs have won four consecutive Big South series for the first time in program history.
Lankford Leads the Pack – Even with the loss, some Bulldog baseball history was made Saturday as senior Brandon Lankford became the program's all-time home run leader slugging his 43rd career long ball. Lankford, who has a league-leading eight home runs this season, is now chasing the program's all-time RBI record. Lankford has driven in 140 runs, and the record is 169 held by Elliott Arrington. Additionally, Lankford is 10 home runs away from tying the Big South record of 53 held by Winthrop's Jason Colson (1998-2001).
Big South Recognitions – Earlier this week, the duo of Dominic Freeberger and Jacob Edwards were named the Big South Player of the Week and Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played between April 5-12. Asheville has garnered four weekly honors from the conference in 2021, which is the most for the program since 2008, when it also collected four accolades.
Brief Break from Conference Play – Currently, these three games vs. the Seahawks will be the final non-conference games on the Bulldogs' schedule in 2021. After Sunday, Asheville will close out its regular season with 18 straight Big South games.
About UNC Wilmington – Wilmington comes into the weekend sporting a record of 15-13 overall and a 4-5 mark in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. UNCW will be looking to snap a four-game losing skid it brings into the series with the Bulldogs as well. The Seahawks have a productive offense with a .276 team batting average and have launched a CAA-leading 27 home runs in 2021.
Series Rewind vs. Wilmington – Asheville and Wilmington have not met often over the years, with just six all-time meetings coming into this weekend. UNCW has won five of the six matchups, including a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs the last time the two programs matched up in 2015. Asheville's lone victory vs. the Seahawks came on March 4, 2012, by a score of 7-2 at Greenwood Field.
