Bulldogs Drop Opener at Wilmington, 8-0
04.16.2021 | Baseball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped the series opener at UNC Wilmington by a score of 8-0 Friday evening in non-conference action.
After a scoreless first inning, the Seahawks were able to put some things together in the second. A two-run home run started things off before back-to-back RBI singles later in the inning staked UNCW to an early 4-0 lead.
Justin Honeycutt, who entered the game in the second inning, eventually settled things down for the Bulldogs tossing 4.2 innings of relief work. At one point, Honeycutt retired 11 Seahawks in a row. However, the UNCW bats woke up again in the sixth to plate another run to make it 5-0 Wilmington before scoring three more in the eighth.
Wilmington starter Landen Roupp had an outstanding outing Friday, keeping Asheville's offense off-balance. The Seahawk starter scattered three singles and a walk over nine shutout innings to go with 10 strikeouts.
The three Bulldog hits came from Ty Kaufman, Wade Chandler, and Grayson Preslar. Brandon Lankford drew Asheville's lone walk in the contest.
The Bulldogs and Seahawks will meet again on Saturday for game two of this weekend's series. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
