Bulldogs Drop a Close One at UNCW, 3-2

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team had the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth inning but ultimately fell to UNC Wilmington by a score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Much like in Friday's series opener, Wilmington's pitching staff did a fantastic job of keeping the Bulldog offense in check early on. Through eight innings, Asheville mustered just three singles and one walk. However, the Bulldog offense started to spark in the ninth. Grayson Preslar led things off with a walk followed by an infield single by Ty Kaufman. On Kaufman's single, a throwing error by UNCW allowed Preslar to advance to third. Dominic Freeberger would drive in Preslar with a sacrifice fly, and Kaufman would move up to second on another fielding miscue by the Seahawks.
The tying run stepped up to the plate in Brandon Lankford, who drove a long fly ball to the warning track but was caught. A batter later, MJ Lucas came through with a 2-out RBI single to make it 3-2 UNCW. With the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate, the Seahawks were finally able to get that elusive third out on a flyout to finish off the 3-2 victory.
The Bulldogs used just two pitchers on Saturday. Starter Jacob Edwards turned in another stellar outing working the first 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits to go with four strikeouts. Kole Harris tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out one. Both Edwards and Harris were helped Saturday by the Bulldog defense that turned four double plays on the day.
All five of Asheville's hits Saturday were singles, and three of the five came from the bottom of the order. Wade Chandler went 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to four games. Cam Johnson also went 1-for-3, while Preslar was the lone Bulldog to reach base twice in the contest with a single and a walk.
Asheville and Wilmington will conclude the weekend series on Sunday. The first pitch for the series finale is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
