Wilmington Rallies Late to Down Bulldogs, 4-3
04.18.2021 | Baseball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team held the lead for most of Sunday's series finale at UNC Wilmington, but the Seahawks mounted a late rally to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-3.
Sebastian Dunn paced Asheville on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Grayson Preslar continued his stellar weekend against UNCW pitching as he also went 3-for-4. The tandem of Ty Kaufman and Dominic Freeberger each collected two hits, and Wade Chandler picked up Asheville's other hit in the contest.
Sunday's contest began well for Asheville as Kaufman led off the game with a single, and Freeberger followed with a double to mount an early scoring threat against UNCW starter Luke Gesell. A couple of batters later, Dunn would drive in both Kaufman and Freeberger to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the weekend, 2-0.
Freeberger sparked the offense again in the third as he began the inning with a single to right field. After Freeberger stole second, Dunn again came through with a single to build Asheville's lead to 3-0.
Facing its first deficit of the weekend, the Seahawks chipped away at the Bulldog lead. UNCW scored one in the fifth without a hit before slugging a solo home run in the sixth and a two-run home run in the seventh to pull in front for good, 4-3.
The Bulldogs had a bullpen game on Sunday as nine different pitchers logged time on the mound. Trey Jernigan, who started the game, had the longest outing by a Bulldog pitching 1.2 innings and striking out two. Gino Marra and Freeberger combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief late in the contest. Additionally, Ethan Tressler notched a couple of crucial outs early as he got the Bulldogs out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the third to keep UNCW scoreless.
Asheville will return to Big South play on Tuesday when it makes the short trip to Gardner-Webb. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m.
