Bulldogs Slug Four Home Runs but Fall at Gardner-Webb
04.20.2021 | Baseball
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team slugged four home runs Tuesday at Gardner-Webb, including two off the bat of Brandon Lankford, but ultimately fell to the Runnin' Bulldogs by a score of 15-4. The four home runs hit by Asheville Tuesday are the most for the team in a single game since April 16, 2008, at Furman, when it also hit four.
Lankford's two home runs bring his home run total to 10 on the season, which leads the Big South. Lankford is now up to 45 home runs in his career as a Bulldog. His 45 home runs are tied for the fifth-most in league history with Coastal Carolina's Mike Costanzo (2003-2007).
Asheville's other two home runs came from two players that did not start the game. Easton Jones and Kole Harris both connected for their respective first home runs of the 2021 season. For Jones, it marked his first as a Bulldog, while it marked Harris' sixth and first since 2019.
Tuesday's game began well for Asheville as Lankford gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with his first home run of the day to dead centerfield. Gardner-Webb, however, came out swinging, scoring four in the first, three in the third, three in the fourth, and four more in fifth. With the Gardner-Webb bats clicking so well, it built a sizable lead and never surrendered it, eventually winning the contest, 15-4.
Lankford finished Tuesday with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Wade Chandler also had a multi-hit day going 2-for-3. Ty Kaufman, Dominic Freeberger, and Kohl Abrams also picked up hits for Asheville in the contest.
Asheville used eight different pitchers to get through Tuesday's contest. Dawson Salter, Zeus Ponder, and Bryce Fisher highlighted these outings as each threw scoreless appearances.
Next up for Asheville is a three-game series vs. Charleston Southern at Greenwood Field. Currently, the Bulldogs and Buccaneers are scheduled to play a single game Friday at 5 p.m. and then a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
