ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After briefly stepping out of conference play, the UNC Asheville baseball team will jump back into Big South action on Tuesday when it travels to take on Gardner-Webb. The first pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – In their last game, the Bulldogs dropped a 4-3 decision at UNC Wilmington on Sunday. The loss moved Asheville's record to 10-19 on the 2021 season.
Praise for Preslar – One Bulldog that had a great series at UNCW was Grayson Preslar. The sophomore outfielder hit .625 with five hits in eight at-bats, scored a run, and drew one walk in the three games. His top performance came in the series finale Sunday, where he went 3-for-4. Furthermore, Preslar's five hits accounted for over a quarter of Asheville hits (19 hits) in the series.
Senior Shoutout – Senior Trey Jernigan has been one of Asheville's top arms out of the bullpen this spring. Jernigan has been particularly good lately as he has posted a 2.70 ERA with six strikeouts in 10 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .171 batting average over the team's last 10 games.
Chandler Making the Most of Chance – Junior Wade Chandler made his first start of the season on April 3 vs. Presbyterian and has been one of Asheville's top offensive players since then. In nine starts in centerfield, Chandler has reached base at least once in all nine games and has hit .364 during this stretch.
Hits Piling Up – Dominic Freeberger has been a key player for the Bulldogs all season long, not only with his work at the plate but also with his fielding flexibility seeing time at four different positions. Currently, Freeberger ranks second in the Big South with 38 hits trailing only USC Upstate's Jason Matthews, who has 44 hits.
About Gardner-Webb – The Runnin' Bulldogs enter Tuesday's game with the Bulldogs sitting just a half-game behind USC Upstate for the top spot in the league standings with a 13-8 record. GWU is coming off a weekend series vs. Campbell, where the Fighting Camels took two of the three games. Gardner-Webb has a deep and balanced squad with five players sporting a batting average of .280 or higher, and it has 10 different pitchers to account for its 14 victories in 2021.
Series Rewind vs. Gardner-Webb – Tuesday's game will mark the second meeting of the season between Asheville and Gardner-Webb. These two teams also met on March 23 at Greenwood Field with GWU coming out on top, 6-3. Freeberger and Michael Groves paced the Bulldogs in that contest with two hits each.
