12.01.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After a one-year absence, Education Day returned to Kimmel Arena on Wednesday. The UNC Asheville women's basketball team did not disappoint the youngsters in attendance, downing Warren Wilson by a score of 100-36.
The Bulldogs had several players register new career-highs on Wednesday. Jamia Blake and Mallory Bruce were two of those players who finished the game tied for the team lead with 20 points each. Maliyah Lockett also ended the day in double figures with 10 points.
"Our marketing department did a great job," said Head Coach Honey Brown of Education Day. "We were expecting closer to 1,000 students, but due to CoVID spikes and other things out of our control, we didn't quite have that many. But those that came out, I heard them. It was awesome having some young people in the stands. There are so many other things that aren't just basketball-related for this day. It's an awesome event, and I appreciate Warren Wilson coming over and playing."
Asheville jumped on the Owls right away as Faith Adams sunk a 3-pointer eight seconds into the contest. The Bulldog offense was off and running, shooting an impressive 65 percent from the field in the first quarter along with a perfect 3-for-3 effort from the free-throw line. In the second quarter, the Bulldogs cooled off a bit, but Asheville still led Warren Wilson by 31 points, 51-20, after two quarters.
A big key for Asheville in the first two quarters was its work down low. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Owls 30-12 in the first 20 minutes and held a 28-4 advantage in points in the paint as well. The duo of Jamia Blake and Lockett led the charge for Asheville as each player netted nine points in the first half.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on the Owls in the second half outscoring the opposition 49-16. Bruce was incredibly productive in the third and fourth quarters as she netted 14 of her 20 points in the final two frames. Asheville maintained its advantage down low with a 26-12 edge in points in the paint and scored 13 second-chance points compared to two for Warren Wilson. With these factors working together, the Bulldogs cruised to a 100-36 win.
Wednesday's 100-point outing by the Bulldogs marked the first time they have reached the century mark on the scoreboard since December 4th, 2017, when they beat Warren Wilson, 100-53. Additionally, the 36 points allowed by Asheville are the fewest it had yielded in a game since December 21st, 2019, when it surrendered 34 against Southern.
Asheville will aim to get a winning streak started in its next game when it visits East Tennessee State for a non-conference contest on December 10th. Tip-off between the Buccaneers and Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
