Bulldogs down ETSU, 66-56, for their second straight win

12.10.2021 | Women's Basketball

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans matched a season-high with 31 points on an 11-for-19 effort from the field to help lead the UNC Asheville women's basketball team to a 66-56 victory over East Tennessee State on Friday evening. The victory improves Asheville's record to 5-3 on the 2021-22 campaign.

"It was great to get another road win," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "A few times I think you could tell we had not played in over a week due to exams but we hung in there. ETSU definitely prepared us for some upcoming games."

Evans, who also scored 31 points in an overtime win over Western Carolina earlier this season, was one of two Bulldogs to finish the night in double figures. Kai Carter finished the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the 2021-22 campaign. In addition to her scoring efforts, Evans has nearly notched a double-double herself, finishing with nine rebounds.

Thanks to her 31-point outburst against the Buccaneers, Evans now ranks sixth on Asheville's all-time scoring list as she passed former Bulldog great Shonese Jones, who had 1,411 points. Evans, who has now netted 1,433 points during her time as a Bulldog, needs just 16 more points to move into fifth place on the scoring list.

Asheville opened Friday's game playing well, shooting near 60 percent in the first quarter (56.3). The Bulldogs would keep the pressure on ETSU into the second as well, as they grew their advantage to as many as 13 points with 6:35 to go in the half. However, an 8-0 run by the Buccaneers took a sizable chunk out of the Bulldog lead, 27-22. Asheville responded by attacking the basket and draining a trio of layups to get its lead back out to nine points, 33-24, as the teams adjourned to the locker room for halftime.

When the two teams returned from the break, Asheville kept pressuring ETSU and grew its lead to as many as 16 with 4:29 to go in the third. However, Evans picked up her fourth foul in the fourth quarter, and ETSU got to work. The Buccaneers trimmed the Bulldog lead down to four points with 2:39 to go in the game to swing the momentum.

The Bulldogs attacked and got the line several times over the closing minutes after the wave of momentum created by ETSU. Faith Adams got things started going 1-for-2 from the line, and then Evans closed the game out, going 4-for-5 from the line as the Bulldogs closed the game on an 8-2 run to seal the victory. Overall, Evans finished the second half with 18 points, including an 8-for-11 effort from the free-throw line.

Asheville will have an off day on Saturday before returning to action on Sunday as it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Tar Heels is set for 2 p.m. The game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
