CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon as North Carolina downed the Bulldogs by a score of 107-46 at historic Carmichael Arena. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 5-4 on the season.
Asheville had a pair of players finish Sunday's game in double figures. Nadiria Evans led the Bulldogs with 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds, while Kai Carter added 11 points of her own to pace the Bulldogs on their first trip to Chapel Hill since the 2012-13 season.
North Carolina jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring the first 10 points of the contest. Mallory Bruce got Asheville on the board with a pair of made free throws. Following the made shots from Bruce, Carter knocked down a couple of 3-pointers to give the Bulldogs some momentum. However, the Tar Heels quickly answered the run from Asheville with one of their own, closing the first quarter on an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 27-10. A big key in UNC's runs that bookended the first quarter was its work on the glass. Overall, North Carolina out-rebounded Asheville 15-4 in the first 10 minutes that included nine offensive rebounds that translated to 12 second-chance points.
The Tar Heels kept things rolling in the second as they upped their shooting percentage from the field from 45.8 to 66.7 percent from the first to the second quarter. UNC also did stellar work defensively as it held Asheville off the scoreboard for the last 4:18 of the half. With both factors working together, North Carolina built its lead to 53-17 after 20 minutes of action.
As the second half began, Asheville knocked down a couple of shots early with a 3-pointer from Abigail Wilson and a made jumper from Carter. North Carolina, however, came out of the locker room clicking even better than it did in the first half connecting on nine of its first 10 shots from the field in the quarter. UNC cooled off a bit in the late stages of the quarter, but it still held a 79-24 lead on the Bulldogs headed to the fourth quarter.
Asheville put together its best offensive effort of the contest in the final frame. The Bulldogs shot a game-high 69.2 percent from the field, and six different players netted points in the frame. Jordaynia Ivie led the way with five points, while the tandem of Evans and Alonna Sellers each scored four points. Carly Fahey, Bruce, and Maliyah Lockett also scored points for Asheville in the 20-point quarter. Thanks to its lead it built in the first three quarters, North Carolina finished off the victory, however, by a score of 107-46.
Asheville will be back in action next Thursday when it welcomes Austin Peay to Kimmel Arena for its final non-conference home game of the season. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Governors is set for 5 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN+.
