Women’s Basketball returns to Kimmel Arena to host Austin Peay

12.15.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will return home to Kimmel Arena on Thursday to host Austin Peay. Tip-off between the Governors and Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN+ and locally on CW62.

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 107-46 decision on the road at North Carolina on Sunday. The loss pushes the Bulldogs' record to 5-4 on the 2021-22 season.

Nadiria nears fifth place on the scoring list –
With 43 points scored last week, Nadiria Evans moved into sixth place on UNC Asheville's all-time scoring list with 1,445 points. Evans needs just four more points to surpass former Bulldog great Wendy Beecher (1986-90) for fifth place. Furthermore, if or when Evans passes Beecher, she'll rank second on the program's Division I scoring list (since the 1986-87 season) behind only Vicki Giffin's (1,703 points).

Boards and Bulldogs –
Heading into Thursday's game vs. Austin Peay, the Bulldogs lead all Big South teams averaging 40.1 rebounds per contest. In perspective, Asheville averaged 35.4 rebounds per game a season ago. Leading the charge on the boards has been Evans, averaging 6.8 rebounds per contest. Kai Carter (5.3) and Amanda Blake (4.1) are not too far off the pace as well.

Asheville vs. Ohio Valley Conference –
UNC Asheville does not often play teams from the Ohio Valley Conference. Overall, the Bulldogs have played just 17 games (9-8 record) against the current members of the OVC, with the last occurring in the 2018-19 season versus Tennessee Tech. Thursday's game between Asheville and Austin Peay will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Scouting Austin Peay –
Austin Peay will come to Asheville on Thursday sporting a 4-3 record after knocking off Bellarmine 67-54 last Sunday. A player to watch for the Governors is Yamia Jackson, pacing the team averaging 15.0 points per contest.

Toys for Tots –
In partnership with the Western North Carolina Toys for Tots through December 21, if you bring an unwrapped toy valued at $5 or more on game day, you will receive free admission! Bring your toy to the Kimmel Arena Ticket Office to receive your ticket. To learn more about the toy drive or donate online, visit their website here
