Strong Second Quarter leads Austin Peay past Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Austin Peay used a strong shooting effort in the second quarter to down the UNC Asheville women's basketball team by a score of 76-50 Thursday night at Kimmel Arena. The loss moves Asheville's record to 5-5 on the season.
"We were not the aggressors for most of the game, and they caught us back on our heels," said Head Coach Honey Brown afterward. "It's something that we have to continue to work on, making sure we are the aggressors the majority of the time. I believe when we do that, we are usually in it or win the game."
A highlight for Asheville occurred early in the contest as Nadiria Evans moved into fifth place on Asheville's all-time scoring list. Furthermore, Evans also ranks second among Bulldog scorers in the Division I era trailing only Vicki Giffin's 1,703 points. Thanks to her 11 points Thursday, Evans has netted 1,456 points during her time in Asheville.
"She's just a tireless worker," Brown said of Evans. "She'll go home tonight to watch film and be back in the gym tomorrow looking to get better. That's what you want, and it's a major reason why she is setting all these records. Give her credit because teams are arranging their defenses around stopping her, and she still finds a way to score."
In addition to Evans' 11 points, Asheville got a stellar performance from Kai Carter. Carter knocked down a trio of shots from beyond the arc and finished with a team-high 15 points.
Neither team had an issue finding the bottom of the net to begin Thursday's contest. Austin Peay and Asheville combined for 36 points in the opening 10 minutes, and both squads shot 50 percent or higher in the first frame. The Governors' offense was clicking just a little better than the Bulldogs' as they took a 21-15 lead to the second.
The difference in Thursday's contest was in the second quarter. Austin Peay's offense was clicking even better than it did in the first, shooting 11-for-15 from the field and 4-for-6 from 3-point range. Asheville, meanwhile, struggled to get any mojo working as it went 1-for-14 from the field. With the disparities of offensive production, the Governors outscored the Bulldogs 29-6 in the quarter, and they held a 50-21 lead heading to the locker room for halftime.
The Bulldogs regrouped and played the Governors tightly in the second half. After allowing 50 points in the first 20 minutes, Asheville held Austin Peay to 26 points over the final 20 and outscored APU, 29-26. However, that early lead the Governors built in the first half was enough to finish a 76-50 win over the Bulldogs.
Asheville will aim to bounce back on Monday when it visits Chattanooga to wrap up its non-conference schedule. Tip-off between the Mocs and Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m.
"We've got to get back to playing Bulldog basketball," Brown said of looking ahead to Monday's matchup with the Mocs. "By that, I mean we need to be the aggressors and get back to us dictating things offensively and defensively."
