Bulldogs rally late but fall short at Chattanooga

12.20.2021 | Women's Basketball

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team mounted a late rally but ultimately fell on the road at Chattanooga by a score of 62-51. The loss pushes Asheville's record to 5-6 on the 2021-22 campaign.

Kai Carter led Asheville on the scoresheet netting a team-high 12 points. Nadiria Evans added nine points, while the duo of Mallory Bruce and Amanda Blake chipped in eight points each to round out the scoring leaders for the Bulldogs.

"I felt like we got off to a poor start and dug a hole," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "I'm proud of our fight, and I do believe our non-conference schedule has prepared us for the Big South season. We'll take a few days off and get back to work after Christmas."

Chattanooga came out of the gates Monday on a roll. The Mocs netted the first 14 points of the contest. Blake finally got the Bulldogs on the board with a layup with 5:43 to go in the opening frame. Asheville knocked down a couple more buckets in the final minutes of the first quarter, but the Mocs still held a 20-6 lead after 10 minutes of action.

The second quarter was much better for Asheville. After being limited to six points in the first, the Bulldogs used a mix of field goals along with getting to the free throw line to outscore the Mocs, 16-13 in the second. Bruce had a nice quarter in the bounce-back frame for the Bulldogs netting a team-high five points. Even with the better play from Asheville on the offensive end, Chattanooga still led at the break, 33-22.

Much like it did to begin the game, Chattanooga began the second half with a sizable run. The Mocs scored 15 of the first 16 points to build their lead further. Asheville did chip into the deficit a bit with a 10-5 run of its own to close out the quarter, but it still faced a 19-point hole headed to the fourth and final quarter.

Asheville put together arguably its best effort of the game in the final frame. The Bulldogs more than doubled up the Mocs on the scoreboard in the final 10 minutes, 19-9, with six different players accounting for the point total. However, Chattanooga's lead through the first three quarters stood up as it finished off a 62-51 win over the Bulldogs.

Asheville will return to action on December 29 when it welcomes Radford to Kimmel Arena for both teams' Big South opener. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Highlanders is set for 6:30 p.m.
