Women’s Basketball opens Big South play Wednesday by hosting Radford

12.28.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will open its Big South schedule Wednesday evening as it welcomes Radford to Kimmel Arena. Tip-off between the Highlanders and Bulldogs is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game can be watched on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – Asheville was last on the court on December 20 when it dropped a road contest at Chattanooga by a score of 62-51. With the loss, the Bulldogs' non-conference record for the 2021-22 season concludes at 5-6.

Scoring Leader – As Big South play begins, fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans currently leads the conference in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game. If Evans can remain at the top of the league's scoring charts for the rest of the season, she'll become just the second Bulldog ever to lead the Big South in scoring average in a season joining Vicki Giffin (16.1 PPG in 1995-96).

Confidence in Conference Openers – Asheville should bring some confidence into Wednesday's game as it has won three of its last four conference openers. One of those victories came last season as the Bulldogs downed eventual league champion, High Point, on the road by a score of 63-54.

Playback of Preseason Predictions – With conference play beginning in earnest Wednesday, both the Highlanders and Bulldogs will look to improve upon where they were projected to finish in the preseason poll. Both teams were picked to finish in the middle of the pack, with Radford sixth, while the Bulldogs were tied for seventh.

About Radford – Radford will come to Asheville with an overall record of 4-7 on Wednesday. The Highlanders will aim to begin its conference schedule with a win and snap a four-game losing streak they bring into the contest. A strength for Radford so far in 2021-22 has been the ability to get offensive contributions from several different players as six different Highlanders are averaging 6.0 points per game or higher.

Series Rewind vs. Radford – Radford and UNC Asheville have quite the history as they are two of four teams that have been in a Big South since its first season of women's basketball back in 1986-87. Overall, Radford holds the edge, winning 57 of the 83 all-time matchups. However, the past two season series have been split, with each team picking up a win against the other.

How to Follow - As mentioned earlier, Thursday's game will air on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available for following, or fans can tune to Rewind 100.3 to hear the radio call from Mike Gore.
