Women’s Basketball heads to Chapel Hill for a matchup at North Carolina on Sunday

12.11.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Fresh off back-to-back victories, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team will travel to historic Carmichael Arena to take on North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Tar Heels is set for 2 p.m., and the game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

Last Time Out – The Bulldogs notched their fifth win of the season on Friday as they downed East Tennessee State on the road, 66-56. Asheville is now 5-3 on the 2021-22 campaign with the victory.

Evans' Scoring Effort – A key in Asheville's win over ETSU was the play of its fifth-year senior Nadiria Evans. Evans matched a season-high with 31 points to lead the charge for the Bulldogs' offense. It marked the fifth time that Evans has eclipsed the 30-point plateau in her career and the 22nd time she scored 20 or more in a game.

Nadiria Moves North on Scoring List – Evans moved into sixth place on Asheville's all-time scoring list with 1,433 points with her scoring performance Friday. She needs just 16 more points to move into fifth place, surpassing Bulldog great Wendy Beecher's 1,448 points. Furthermore, if Evans passes Beecher, she'll rank second among Bulldog scorers in the Division I era, behind only Vicki Giffin's 1,703 points.

About North Carolina – The Tar Heels have been rolling in the early going of the 2021-22 season as they bring a perfect 8-0 record into Sunday's game with Asheville. North Carolina has not only won but has done so decisively, winning by an average of over 30 points per game.

UNC has a balanced team with six players averaging better than eight points per game, including three that boast scoring averages in double digits. One of these players is Alyssa Ustby, who ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in double-doubles (1st – 4), field goals made (8th – 53), field goal percentage (7th – 51.0), points per game (5th – 15.8), rebounding (5th – 78), and rebounding average (2nd – 9.8).

Series Rewind vs. UNC – UNC Asheville has faced off against North Carolina a total of five times over the years, with the first matchup occurring back in the 1993-94 season. UNC has won all five games between the two schools, including a 101-42 win in the last meeting on November 25, 2012.
