Women’s Basketball returns to action Friday at East Tennessee State

12.09.2021 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will return to action on Friday when it makes the short trip to Johnson City, Tennessee to take on East Tennessee State. Tip-off for Friday's game is set for 6 p.m. and it can be seen on ESPN+.

Last Time Out – In its last game, Asheville cruised to a 100-36 victory over Warren Wilson. With the victory, the Bulldogs are now 4-3 on the season. Furthermore, that performance marked the first time Asheville has reached the century mark on the scoreboard since December 4th, 2017, when they beat Warren Wilson, 100-53. Additionally, the 36 points allowed by Asheville are the fewest it had yielded in a game since December 21st, 2019, when it surrendered 34 against Southern.

20/20 Effort – The victory over Warren Wilson was fueled in part due to the outings by Jamia Blake and Mallory Bruce. Both players set new career-highs with 20 points each against the Owls. With the pair of 20-point outings from Blake and Bruce, the Bulldogs now have four players on their roster that have scored 20 points or more at least once this season, with the other two being Kai Carter and Nadiria Evans. The four players with a 20-plus point performance are the most in the Big South.

Note on Nadiria - Evans, a fifth-year senior, continues her climb up the all-time scoring list at UNC Asheville. Evans currently ranks seventh in the history of Asheville's program with 1,402 points scored and needs just 10 points to move into sixth place and 47 more for fifth place. In 2021-22, Evans leads all Big South players averaging 19.5 points per game.

SoCon Stats – Friday's matchup with ETSU will mark the fifth game that Asheville has played against a Southern Conference team this season. The Bulldogs own wins over Western Carolina (74-72 OT) and Wofford (70-64) but have suffered setbacks to UNC Greensboro (52-48) and Furman (64-49). Asheville will have one more contest against a SoCon school this season, which will be at Chattanooga on December 20.

About ETSU – ETSU will bring a record of 1-7 into Friday's game with the Bulldogs. The Buccaneers are led by first-year Head Coach Simon Harris, who spent time as an assistant coach at Ohio State, NC State, and Dayton before coming to Johnson City. A strength for ETSU in the early going has been its ability to generate turnovers. The Buccaneers lead their conference averaging 9.6 steals per game and a turnover margin (+2.0).

Series Rewind vs. ETSU – Asheville and ETSU have met a total of 21 times over the years, with the first meeting occurring in the 1981-82 season. The Buccaneers have defeated Asheville 18 times, but the Bulldogs have come away with victories in the last two matchups: December 11, 2018, in Kimmel Arena (56-55) and November 23, 2019, at ETSU (72-54).
