Bulldogs Sweep Doubleheader; Take First Two Games Versus Coppin State

03.07.2020 | Baseball

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball swept the Eagles of Coppin State in a doubleheader Saturday at Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Bulldogs won game one by a score of 3-2 while the shutout the Eagles in game two winning 5-0.

Game One
The Bulldogs won game one with a walk-off single in the 10th inning to put the Eagles away by a score of 3-2.

Jacob Edwards started game one for UNC Asheville and put Coppin State three up and three down in the top of the first.

Greg Gasparro got the Bulldogs on the board early as he led-off the bottom of the first with a no-doubt homerun that he pulled into the bushes beyond the rightfield wall for his second big fly of the season.

The Eagles got that run back in the top of the second as Connor Walker reached third on an error by the leftfielder to lead off the inning. After Edwards sent the next batter down on strikes, Walker crossed the plate on a little dribbler to the first baseman who chose to take the sure out at first.

The game remained tied through the next two innings as both starters were dealing. Justin Banks broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning as he hit a lead-off homer to put Coppin State ahead 2-1.

The Bulldogs evened the score once again as Gasparro led off the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side. The speedy centerfielder stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch to put a Bulldog runner on third with no one out. Sebastian Dunn brought Gasparro in to score as he hit a sacrifice fly to center to push across the tying run.

Edwards was removed from the ballgame after seven strong innings with the game still tied at two. The sophomore lefty allowed only one earned run on three hits with six punchouts through his seven innings of work. It is the second time this season that Edwards has worked seven or more innings.

JP Perez entered the game for the Bulldogs in the eighth inning and pitched an uneventful top of the eighth to keep the game tied.

Perez found himself in trouble in the top of the ninth as three batters reached by way of a single, an intentional walk and a throwing error to load the bases with one out as Coppin State threatened to break the even score. Perez sent down the next batter on strikes to get a huge out number two. The Bulldogs were given a gift as the Eagle runner on third broke for the plate on a wild pitch that ricocheted off the brick backstop right to catcher PJ Heintz. The runner retreated to third but the throw from Heintz beat him as the third baseman Dominic Freeberger put the tag on the runner to end the inning and get the Bulldogs out of the jam.

That set the Bulldogs up to win it in the bottom of the tenth as UNC Asheville got the lead-off man on with a walk by Dunn. He advanced to third on a single by Freeberger. After Freeberger stole second, the Eagles intentionally walked Easton Jones to put a force at any bag with Chris Troost coming to bat. Troost made sure that the force out wasn't needed as he sent a ball over the rightfielder's head that found a patch of grass to bring home the winning run.

Perez was credited with the win after throwing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen as he allowed only one hit and struck out four.

Game Two
The low scoring affair continued into game two as the latter game of the doubleheader turned into a pitchers' duel. Neither starter wanted to give up the first run as the game remained deadlocked at zero through the first four and a half innings.

The Bulldogs finally broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth as Chris Troost reached on an error by the second baseman and then advanced to second on an errant throw. UNC Asheville opted to play small ball with no one out to try and push across that coveted first run.

Tyler Serricchio laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Troost over to third with one out. Kole Harris decided to try the same thing to bring Troost home as Harris laid down a safety squeeze to the pitcher that was placed perfectly as Troost slid in to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.

Coppin State led-off the second inning with a single up the middle that proved to be their only hit of the game as senior Blake Brown was dealing from the mound. Brown threw 5.2 innings and earned the win as he struck out seven batters while allowing just the one hit.

Brown found himself in a little bit of trouble in the sixth as he had runners on first and second after an error and a walk. Brown was relieved by Ethan Tressler who entered the game with two outs and sent down the one batter he faced on strikes to preserve the Bulldogs' lead.

The Bulldogs scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as UNC Asheville got three runners on by way of a walk, a hit by pitch and an error. The Bulldogs found themselves up 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Kole Harris stepped up to the plate and delivered with the Bulldogs first and only hit of the game as he hit a two-RBI ground rule double that one-hopped the leftfield wall and scored two to put UNC Asheville up 5-0.

Harris then moved to the mound to shut the door on the Eagles in the scheduled seven inning game to secure the 5-0 victory for the Bulldogs and sweep the doubleheader.
