Bulldogs Drop the Finale of the Series to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – After winning the series by taking games one and two, the Bulldogs dropped the finale to UAB Sunday by a score of 5-0.
The Bulldogs scored 14 runs through the first two games of the series but their bats were stifled by the UAB pitching as UNC Asheville scattered just five hits in game three of the series.
The Bulldogs grabbed three hits through the first two innings but couldn't push a run across as the Blazer starter worked out of trouble in both innings.
UNC Asheville seemed to be putting something together in the top of the fourth as Brandon Lankford hit a one out single and then advanced to second on an Easton Jones walk, putting Bulldogs on first and second with one out. Unfortunately, both runners would be left standing as a fly out and ground out got UAB out of trouble.
The Bulldogs had a similar scenario unfold in the sixth as Lankford drew a one out walk and then advanced to second once again, this time on a Jones' single. This time a fly out and strike out sent the Bulldogs down in the inning with two on.
Ryan Douglas worked around a single in the first but UAB managed to push three runs across in the bottom of the second inning. Caleb Floyd led off their half of the inning with a solo home run to left. Two more blazers reached base after that with a walk and an error to put two runners on and one out. A sacrifice fly and double in the gap allowed runners to score but Douglas stopped the bleeding as he got a fly out to end the inning and strand a runner in scoring position.
After a one, two, three third inning, Douglas stranded three runners on in the fourth innings as he worked around a single and two walks to keep the deficit at 3-0.
Douglas was pulled after four innings as the freshman ended with a line of four innings pitched, three runs, four hits and two strikeouts. He was relieved by Chris Banks who made his debut in a Bulldog uniform Sunday and threw two innings of one hit ball to get the Bulldogs to the seventh inning still down by three.
UAB added insurance runs in the seventh and the eighth to go up 5-0 but the Bulldog offense went three up and three down in each of the final three innings to drop the finale.
