KNOXVILLE, TENN. – UNC Asheville baseball dropped their midweek matchup with Tennessee by a score of 12-1 Wednesday evening at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
UNC Asheville got the lead-off guy on to start the ballgame as Greg Gasparro singled to centerfield. Two straight groundouts and a strikeout ended the inning for the Bulldogs though as Gasparro was left stranded.
Bulldog starter Blake Little threw a three up and three down bottom of the first as the freshman right-hander retired the Vols in order in less than 10 pitches. Little allowed his first run of the game in the bottom of the second as Alerick Soularie homered to left with one out in the inning to give Tennessee an early lead.
The Bulldogs led off the third with their second lead-off hit of the game as Grayson Preslar singled down the left field line. After a strikeout form the catcher MJ Lucas, Preslar's single was erased with an ending double play.
The Vols built upon their lead in the third as they scored two more runs on four hits. Little worked out of trouble thanks to a heads up play from his defense. Soularie lined out to centerfield with one out and runners on first and second. Both runners attempted to advance and the centerfielder Gasparro fired a strike to the second baseman, Chris Troost, to nail the trailing runner.
Little was relieved after three innings as Ethan Tressler entered in the fourth and pitched around one hit to keep Tennessee off the scoreboard.
Chris Banks was handed the ball for the bottom of the fifth and he mimicked Tressler's performance as he too pitched around a single but ended the inning with a Volunteer touching the plate.
Tennessee broke the game open in the middle innings as they scored a combined nine runs in the sixth and seventh. The Bulldogs used three pitchers in the bottom of the sixth as Tennessee scored five runs on three hits. The Volunteers then added four more runs in the seventh as UNC Asheville sent two pitchers to the hill.
The Bulldogs finally got the goose egg off the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Troost led off the inning with a single to right field and Will Barbour followed that up with another single to put two Bulldog runners on. Pinch-hitter Tye Chastain moved both runners into scoring position with a little dribbler back to the pitcher. Lucas came to the plate with one down and runners on second and third and hit a hard ground ball to the first baseman who flipped to the pitcher for the out but allowed the run to score from third.
Dominic Freeberger moved from right field to the mound to pitch the bottom of the eighth. The right-hander allowed two hits but worked around both as he ended the inning without allowing Tennessee to tack on another run.
Tennessee shut the door on the Bulldogs with a three up and three down top of the ninth to secure the 12-1 loss for the Volunteers.
