NASHVILLE, TENN. – UNC Asheville baseball dropped game one of their three-game series versus Belmont by a score of 16-4 Friday evening.

Chris Troost led the Bulldogs with three hits in the loss while Greg Gasparro and Dominic Freeberger each reached base three times. Troost and Brandon Lankford each had two RBIs in the game.

The Bulldogs scored first as they pushed a run across in the first inning. Lead-off hitter Greg Gasparro singled to left to start out the ballgame. Dominic Freeberger singled to right-center with one out to move Gasparro to third base. Clean-up hitter Brandon Lankford hit Gasparro in from third with a sacrifice fly to left to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 before starter Jacob Edwards ever took the mound.

Edwards threw a three up and three down bottom of the first and then got through the second inning allowing one base runner on a walk.

UNC Asheville scored two more in the top of the third as Gasparro led off the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Sebastian Dunn. After a pop up for out number two, Lankford came through in the clutch again as he singled to right field to push across the second run of the game.

Lankford came around to score the Bulldogs' third run of the game as the senior third baseman stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Chris Troost hit a two-out single to center field to bring in Lankford for the third of the game.

Belmont got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third as Jackson Campbell homered to left center to bring in the Bruins' first run of the game. Edwards sent down the next three Bruins in order as he got two strikeouts and a ground out to send the game to the fourth with the Bulldogs leading 3-1.

Belmont broke through in the fourth inning as they grabbed the lead from UNC Asheville. The Bruins strung together four straight two-out hits as they pushed across four runs to take a 5-3 lead going into the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the fifth as Freeberger led off the inning with a double to left center. After a pop up and a strikeout, Troost came through in the clutch with his second two-out hit of the game as he singled to left to score Freeberger to bring the Bulldogs within one.

Belmont quickly extended the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and then extended their lead even more as they added another run in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead.

The Bruins broke the game open over the next two innings as they scored a combined nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 16-4 lead into the ninth.

The Bulldogs got three runners on in the top of the ninth but couldn't push another run across as Belmont secured the 16-4 victory.
