Early Runs Not Enough as Bulldogs Fall to Samford

02.15.2020 | Baseball

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Despite scoring four runs in the first two innings, UNC Asheville baseball dropped its second straight game to Samford by a score of 13-6 Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldog bats were on a roll early as UNC Asheville's offense spotted pitcher Blake Brown two runs before he ever stepped on the mound. Greg Gasparro led off the game by reaching on a hit by pitch before Sebastian Dunn advanced him to second with a single through the left side. Gasparro scored the first run of the game on a throwing error by Samford's pitcher that allowed Dunn to advance to third while Dominic Freeberger reached second base.

Brandon Lankford took advantage of the runners in scoring position as he singled to center field to bring Dunn across the plate for a 2-0 lead. Lankford stole second base to put two Bulldogs in scoring position again but three straight strikeouts ending the inning, stranding the runners.
Brown kept the Bulldogs' momentum going with a strong one, two, three bottom half of the inning. The senior righty induced two ground balls and punched out one to bring the Bulldogs back up to bat.

Kole Harris singled to left field for the Bulldogs third hit of the game with one out in the top of the second. Greg Gasparro stepped up for his second at bat in as many innings and gave the Bulldogs a boost with his first home run of the year as he sent the ball over the right field wall to increase UNC Asheville's lead to 4-0.

After a three up three down bottom of the second, Samford broke through against Brown in the bottom of the third as they scored two runs to cut UNC Asheville's lead in half. Brown surrendered only one hit in the inning but he allowed three Samford baserunners by way of walks.

Brown allowed another run in the fourth while again only allowing one hit but he let two more reach on free passes before he was relieved by Ethan Tressler with two runners on and two outs. Tressler got the Bulldogs out of the jam with their lead intact by popping up Samford's leadoff batter for the third out of the inning.

The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the fifth after Dunn was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Freeberger. Second baseman Will Barbour hit a dribbler down the third base line for an infield single that scored Dunn from third.

Samford responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to even the score at five apiece.

The Bulldogs took the lead back in the top of the sixth as Chris Troost led off the inning with a pinch hit single up the middle. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Troost crossed the plate to put UNC Asheville ahead on a single up the middle by Gasparro.

Samford's offense broke through against the Bulldog bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings to take their first lead of the game. Samford scored a total of eight runs in those two half innings to take a 13-6 lead.

Tyler Serricchio held Samford scoreless in the eighth inning as the senior right-hander struck out two and didn't allow a hit. Samford's bullpen shut down the Bulldog bats as UNC Asheville couldn't push a run across in the final three innings of the game.

Gasparro reach based three times in the game as he went 2-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Dunn also touched home plate twice as he had one hit in the game. Lankford and Barbour each were credited with an RBI in the loss. Brown allowed only two hits and two earned runs in the game while punching out four batters in his 3.2 innings. JP Perez took the loss in the game after allowing only one unearned run on two hits in one inning pitched.

First pitch for game three of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday afternoon. Freshman Ryan Douglas is expected to get the start for the Bulldogs in what will be his UNC Asheville debut.
