Baseball to Open 2020 Season with Weekend Series at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – UNC Asheville will kick off its 2020 campaign this weekend with a three-game series versus Southern Conference member Samford in Birmingham, Ala.
Game one of the series will take place at 5 p.m. (ET), Friday, February 14, while game two will be Saturday at 2 p.m. (ET). The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET), Sunday, February 16. All games will be played at Samford's Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Probable Starters
Friday: LHP Jacob Edwards vs. LHP Samuel Strickland
Saturday: RHP Blake Brown vs. LHP Hamp Skinner
Sunday: RHP Ryan Douglas vs. RHP Zach Hester
About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville enters the 2020 campaign under sixth-year head coach Scott Friedholm. The Bulldogs are returning a total of 15 players from last year's roster as they have 16 newcomers to the team this season.
The Bulldog roster features six seniors, seven juniors, seven sophomores and 11 freshmen. Of the 16 newcomers, five are junior college transfers.
The Bulldogs return one Big South All-Conference player from last year in third baseman Brandon Lankford. Lankford and outfielder Greg Gasparro both received NCCSIA All-State honors for their work in the 2019 season. Lankford finished the season in the top-40 in the nation with 15 home runs while Gasparro was amongst the best in the Big South with a .329 batting average.
About Samford
Samford finished the 2019 season with a 41-19 record and was the No. 1 seed in the Southern Conference tournament. They fell to Mercer 4-3 in their fourth game of the tournament.
Samford was chosen as the preseason favorite by the Southern Conference media and second by the league's coaches ahead of the 2020 season. Senior pitcher Zach Hester was chosen as the Southern Conference preseason Pitcher of the Year.
