Bulldogs Drop Season Opener to Samford
02.14.2020 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – UNC Asheville baseball dropped their season-opener to Samford Friday night in Birmingham, Ala by a score of 15-1.
Samford scored 15 runs on 16 hits while UNC Asheville scored one run on four hits. UNC Asheville stranded six runners in the game while Samford stranded seven.
Sophomore Jacob Edwards worked out of trouble in the first inning with minimal damage when he found himself with runners on first and third with no one out to start the game. The runner on third, who reached base on an error, scored on a sacrifice fly to the center-fielder Greg Gasparro. Edwards got out of the inning with only the unearned run crossing the plate as he induced a groundball to his shortstop, Sebastian Dunn, for an inning ending double-play.
Edwards' success carried over into the second inning as he pitched a one, two, three bottom of the second to keep the score at 1-0.
The Samford offense broke out after that as they scored every inning for a total of 14 runs from the third through the eighth innings.
Brandon Lankford picked up the first hit of the game for UNC Asheville as he led off the Bulldogs' fifth inning with an opposite field single to right. The Bulldogs couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as the next three batters all flew out, stranding Lankford.
The Bulldogs got two runners on in the top of the sixth as Greg Gasparro drew a walk with two outs and Sebastian Dunn followed that with an infield single. Dominic Freeberger followed that up with a hot shot to the third baseman that was bobbled but the Samford defender recovered and fired the ball across the diamond for a close play that was ruled an out to end the Bulldogs' threat.
The Bulldogs' lone run came in the top of the ninth inning as Lankford connected for his first home run of the season that sailed over the left field wall. Easton Jones followed that up with a single up the middle. Lankford and Jones were the only Bulldogs to reach base twice for UNC Asheville.
Game two of the series will be Saturday at 2 p.m. (ET) at Griffin Field. Senior Blake Brown will get the ball for UNC Asheville as he will face off with left-handed pitcher Hamp Skinner.
