HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team, which once trailed by as many as 19 points on Sunday at High Point, battled back to tie the score but ultimately fell to the Panthers by a score of 77-63. The loss moves Asheville's record to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Sophomore Kai Carter led the Bulldogs on the scoreboard Sunday with 17 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds. Nadiria Evans added 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, five assists, and fellow senior Amaryah Corpening finished the contest with 11 points and seven rebounds. Freshmen Amanda Blake (8 rebounds) and Lani Woods (5 rebounds) had career days in terms of rebounding in the contest.
The story of the first half was a pair of runs by High Point. The Panthers began the day scoring the first eight points of the game. Asheville got back into it with a pair of quick 3-pointers from Corpening and Woods but still trailed 17-10 after one quarter.
At the tail end of the first and early stages of the second, the Panthers got out in transition and started knocking down some shots from long distance to lead the Bulldogs by as many as 19 points. However, Asheville battled back to get the deficit back within single digits as the second quarter ended, 35-27.
The Bulldogs put together their best quarter Sunday in the third. As a team, Asheville outscored High Point on a 58.3 field goal percentage, which included a trio of made 3-pointers. The Bulldogs also knocked down eight free throws in the frame to help the cause. With these factors working together, Asheville tied the score in the closing seconds of the quarter before the Panthers scored late to take a 54-52 lead into the final 10 minutes.
As UNC Asheville did Saturday, High Point turned to attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line to maintain its lead. The Panthers got to the line 15 times in the final quarter and converted 13 of those opportunities. The Bulldogs could not match the Panthers' production at the line, which led to the Panthers finishing off the win, 77-63.
Asheville will break for the holidays and will return home to Kimmel Arena to resume its season on December 30-31 when it hosts Longwood.
