Evans Reaches Milestone; Bulldogs Topple Longwood, 74-69

12.30.2020 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Senior Nadiria Evans became the 22nd UNC Asheville women's basketball player to score 1,000 points as she matched a career-high with 34 points to fuel the Bulldogs' 74-69 win over Longwood at Kimmel Arena Wednesday afternoon. Asheville's victory moves its record to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in Big South action.

Both teams were locked in a battle in the first half, with the score being tied seven times and there were five lead changes at the break. Longwood relied heavily on second-chance opportunities and points in the paint to generate offense. Overall, LWU attempted 12 more field goals than Asheville, including 16 points inside the paint and 14 on second attempts. Meanwhile, Asheville was efficient, shooting 50 percent from the field and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Evans paced these efforts netting 17 points in the half. Thanks to Evans and the rest of the Bulldogs led at the half, 39-36.

With Asheville leading by six to start the fourth, Tamiah Lewis provided a spark in the Bulldogs' final frame to help Asheville keep its lead. Lewis scored seven points, including two 3-pointers to go with three rebounds and a steal in the fourth. Longwood mounted a late rally in the closing minutes to get within one possession (72-69) with 29 seconds to go. However, a critical defensive stop from Asheville and two made free throws from Evans finished off the victory for the Bulldogs.

Evans' 34-point effort marks the second time in three games she has finished with that point total. The Gainesville, Florida native also grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go with three assists and three steals. Evans wasn't the only Bulldog to have a career day as Maliyah Lockett chipped in 10 key points off the bench on a 3-for-4 effort from the field and 3-for-3 outing at the line. Amaryah Corpening also finished the contest in double figures with 11 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Asheville and Longwood will match up again on Thursday. Thursday's game, which will be on ESPN+, is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
