Carter’s Career Day Propels Asheville to Second Straight Win over Longwood

12.31.2020 | Women's Basketball

HIGHLIGHTS

ASHEVILLE, N.C.
 – Sophomore Kai Carter scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help lead the UNC Asheville women's basketball team to its second straight win over Longwood Thursday afternoon at Kimmel Arena, 68-52. The victory boosts Asheville's record to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Carter was in a zone Thursday as she shot 60 percent from the field and went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc to fuel her 26-point effort. Furthermore, her 14 rebounds not only led the team but also set a new career-best. Carter's performance on the boards was instrumental in the Bulldogs turning around the rebounding numbers from Wednesday's game. LWU outrebounded the Bulldogs by 26 Wednesday, but with some adjustments, Asheville held the edge on the glass Thursday, 43-41. Raquel Cassidy grabbed a season-high eight rebounds, while Amaryah Corpening and Tamiah Lewis each tallied six to help the cause.

Both teams struggled to get their respective offenses going early, but Asheville's offense woke up with a trio of 3-pointers. Two of those makes came from Carter. Carter finished the frame with eight points, and the Bulldogs held a slim 14-12 lead after one.

Asheville quickly built its advantage as the second quarter got thanks to a 10-2 run. The spark was a team effort as four different Bulldogs accounted for the 10 points. Meanwhile, Longwood struggled against Asheville's defense as it made one field goal in the entire quarter. Longwood did get nine points from the free-throw line to keep pace, but the Bulldogs still held a 28-23 advantage heading into the halftime break.

After scoring just 28 points in the first two quarters, the Bulldogs found their rhythm offensively in the third. Overall, Asheville scored 25 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, including a 3-for-3 effort beyond the arc. The lockdown Asheville defense continued in the third, holding the Lancers to a shooting percentage of 16.7. With these two factors working together, the Bulldogs grew its lead to 18 points, 54-36, going to the final quarter.

The Bulldog offense cooled off considerably in the fourth, but the stellar defense remained. Asheville held the Lancers to under 30 percent from the field for the sixth time in the eight quarters between the teams over the last two days and held on for the decisive 68-52 victory.

In addition to Carter's 26 points, Nadiria Evans and Corpening also finished the day in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. 13 of Asheville's 21 field goals had assists attached. Faith Adams accounted for six of those to go along with eight points that matched her personal best in an Asheville uniform.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a two-game set at Presbyterian on Monday and Tuesday. Monday's contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with Tuesday's set for a 5 p.m. tip-off. Both games can be viewed live or on demand via ESPN+.
